![]() Our 47th Annual Awards Night was held recently and it would not have been such an outstanding
success without those who organised, supported and attended the ceremony. Special thanks to
all. Congratulations to the students who received Principal Awards, Faculty Awards, Sporting
Awards, Citizenship Awards, Leadership Awards and our Special Awards. In particular, Courtney
Lindenmayer (Academic Dux) and Julie Clark (VET Dux); our Sportsman of the Year and
Allrounder, Craig Cauchi; Sportswoman of the Year, April Hering; and our Most Outstanding Big
Brother/Sister Awards to Adam Harvey and Zoe Wood.
Can I also acknowledge our Year 12 Gold Principal Award winners: Kimberley Fry, Sarah
Harding and Courtney Lindenmayer on their outstanding academic results for 2009.
At conclusion of the ceremony, it was my great pleasure to announce our School Captains for
2010, Zoe Wood and Mitchell Wong. Congratulations on their appointment and I look forward to
working with them in 2010. In the next few weeks I will be announcing the successful candidates
of our other leadership positions.
Good luck to our Year 12s as they enter their final assessment period. In a few short weeks, your
Aspley High journey is over.
John Schuh
Principal
For our year 12s, the end of school is nearly here. My congratulations and best wishes to all
students with whom I have worked. We organised and prepared for the QCS test, we organised
time for VET competency completions and we also have some students who choose alternative
pathways during the last 2 years:
SATs
Benjamin Gould, Blake Sutcliffe, Kyle Baumgart, Sarah Cuttler and Adnan Muharemovic.
TAFE
Julie Clark, Aaron Novley Rodgers, Reena Singh, Kathryn Cotter, Tim Delaney and Kayla Webb.
Then we have Mrs Caseys Work Ed class Well done! I sincerely hope that your transition into
further training and work has been made easier thanks to the efforts of Mrs Casey!
A few reminders before we all finish the year:
SAT students need to talk to their employer to see if their SAT will be rolled over to a part-time or
full time Apprenticeship
Check with your teacher to see if you have achieved competency in all VET units. If you are, then
you will receive a Certificate from QSA in February 2010. If you are competent in only some units,
you will receive a Statement of Attainment in February 2010. (These will be sent to the school
first and we will then post them out to the address listed on the school system)
To the Yr 11 Work Ed classes with Mrs Aylward and Miss Aubrey - good luck for 2010 and
may you also work towards a successful transition into work and training in 2011!
As I am also leaving Aspley State High School at the end of the year, I wish all of the Aspley
Community my best wishes for the future and thank you all for the great memories that I have of
Aspley High dating back to 1974 when I first started teaching here after graduating from what is
now QUT. I did move to other schools but returned here in 1986.
![]() I have been the HOD Home Economics for most of that time and must particularly thank Mrs
Bowes, Mrs McInnerney, Mrs Hoffman (now retired), Mrs Paul, Mr McCormack and more recently
Mrs Aylward for being such great people to work with and for being great friends. My time working
with alternative programs, VET and Senior Schooling in the latter years has been rewarding and I
could never have done it without the never ending support of Mrs Sue Christensen (now retired)
and this year, Mrs Sharon Redman. My thanks to Mr Schuh and Mrs Keating for their support and
professionalism during this time.
I was honoured by the gift and the kind words from Carol Fisher, President of the P and C on
Awards Night. Thank you Carol!
It has been a great journey and it is time for me to move on
..travel, 6 grandchildren, my own
family and time to be just me! Good-bye and good luck!

Hi all, Mr. Cronin here on behalf of the HPE department. Well what news do we have down in K
block?
The HPE department would like to say how great the participation and effort the majority of
students are demonstrating this term.
Mr. Kemp has mentioned how well his Year 9 class are working in the gym. He feels there are
going to be some fit and confident students enjoying the summer this year. I would also like to
congratulate my Year 9 class as well for all their efforts with their resistance training. Miss
Robinsons Year 9 class are showing some excellent skill in their tennis unit. I hear the ball
machine will be coming out very shortly, which is always great fun. Mr Kemp, Miss Robinson and I
would like to mention that students need to be working hard on their assignment which is due very
soon, in fact the 20th of November to be exact. So Year 9, keep up the hard work remember its
not just the physical skill that will get you a high result. You must be able to use the brain as well.
Well moving on to the Year 8 classes. Again I am hearing great reports with the effort the Year 8s
are displaying in their swimming unit this semester. Mr Kemp is loving being able to take a swim
as well.
Continuing on, the senior classes are winding down with the Year 12 cohort having exams in the
next week. We wish all the students well with their last piece of assessment before they take off
on a new adventure. We would just like to mention, that students need to concentrate for a few
more weeks and not drop the ball which can cause all sorts of problems for the future. So work
hard until 20th November and then you can party hard. It was fantastic to see Courtney
Lindenmayer take out the School Dux award. She is a senior physical education student and she
also received a VHA9 (Very High Achievement) rating 9 out of a possible 10 which is not easy.
Not many students in Queensland have achieved such a fantastic result. Well done Courtney.
Anyway thats all from the HPE department; we look forward to the next newsletter so we can
share the great stuff that happens in Health and Physical Education.
Yours in Sport,
The HPE staff.
Big Business @ ECOMAN
Last week a group of 14 dedicated Year 10 Aspley High students donned their Business clothes
and commenced a journey into the real business world by attending the ECOMAN Enterprise
Education Program. Once students were placed into one of three teams, their task was revealed:
they would operate an established manufacturing company which produced commercial and
domestic coffee machines. The teams were responsible for setting the budget for 4 years trading
and would then report back to shareholders at an AGM on the final day. Team BUZZ, Team
Cofachines and Team Caffeine Machine were competing against each other to provide
shareholders with the best share price each trading year.
If meeting at 7.00am to depart Zillmere train station to go to QUT Gardens Point Campus wasnt
enough the students received a taste of real working life breaking for only 15 minutes morning
tea and 30 minutes for lunch in order to fulfil the various roles given to them by the Facilitators
Managing Director, Marketing Manager, Human Resource Manager, Production Manager and
Financial Controller. Day Three provided students with an opportunity to enjoy (?) a working lunch
in order to prepare for their AGM.
Day One began with the necessary impartation of key business concepts, interpretation of
Financial Reports and a comprehensive introduction to break even analysis and production
concepts. The concentration and commitment to learning displayed by all students was evident
immediately and did not wane over the three days.
Days Two and Three provided opportunities for the teams to gain an understanding of the roles of
Unions, Market Research and of course Human Resource Management through hands-on
negotiations with the Facilitators. The Best Negotiator could possibly go to Jacinta Gremond who
when faced with the grim prospect of having to spend $15,000 on providing covered walkways
from the production employees carpark to the factory, responded by saying she would provide
umbrellas!
All students proved to be thoughtful of others, well behaved and responded extremely well to the
sustained pressure of business life. Accolades flowed freely from both of the professional
Facilitators as well as QUT staff involved. Well done Teams and I am looking forward to an
exciting year of Accounting in 2010.

ASIAN LUNCH for 8A
Our Year 8s have been enjoying a myriad of classroom activities related to their studies on the
Asia-Pacific region during the unit Fellowship of the Rim. All classes are currently hard at work on
their assignments in which they are compiling a book on a theme of their choice across four
countries in the region. Home and school time must be devoted to this project for a suitably
rewarding outcome. However, our research and preparation lessons are punctuated by classwork,
and in 8As case, by an Asian lunch.
Associate teacher, Julianne Thurlow, who has been taking several classes in preparation for her
appointment as a full-time teacher, concluded her teaching time with 8A Humanities by organising
and preparing an Asian lunch during the second lunch break last Friday.
All students in the class made a monetary contribution to the event, about which Bill was heard to
say, That was $4 very well spent!
![]() Cindy, Mikayla, Kayla and Jasmine serve themselves at the buffet.
A range of hot and cold dishes and snack foods were on offer. Many students were trying foods
(and sauces!) for the first time, and discovering just how yummy they were.
There was no shortage of food, and much delight was shown when thirds and fourths were
called. One student who had better remain anonymous to save embarrassment to his mother
made it to eighths. And there was food left over!
Miss Thurlow looks on as Geoff gets his first plate food.
Thankyous and compliments flowed freely as students left the lunch, although quite a number
enjoyed the feast so much they were still there a couple of minutes before period 4 commenced.
All will surely join me in thanking Miss Thurlow for the great effort she has put into teaching them
and of course, preparing the lunch.
8A enjoying lunch.

![]() CANBERRA TRIP 09
As was communicated to students last week, the $60 per traveller subsidy from the Federal
Government for each Canberra Tripper has been banked into the school account. However, there
is now a preference to make the payment to parents by electronic funds transfer rather than by
cheque. Consequently, parents are now requested to send the following details to the school: BSB
and Bank Account numbers, plus e-mail address. This information can be phoned or emailed to
accounts@aspleyshs.eq.edu.au. Alternatively, money can be credited to school accounts. Please
direct queries to Ms Sue Rose at the office.
TOUCH FOOTBALL COMPETITION
On Tuesday, the Middle School Touch Football competition kicked off with Round 1 of the Year 8
Heats. 8A and 8D did battle, as did 8B and 8F, along with 8C and 8E.
Competition was fierce amongst the six mixed teams, who had a sizeable supporter base on the
sidelines.
The results were: 8D defeated 8A 2 1, 8E defeated 8C 1 0 and 8F defeated 8B 3 - 1. The Year
9 teams were scheduled to compete on Friday and as of press time, we were still awaiting the
outcome.
Here are some of the photographic highlights from the Year 8 competition on Tuesday:
