![]() Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to all parents and carers who attended the Parent/Teacher Night on Tuesday 13th
October. As usual, this evening presented a great occasion for our community to talk about how to
further support our students. It is a very busy term with Awards Night on Wednesday 21st October,
Sports Dinner on Friday 30th October, Instrumental Music Break Up on 13th November and Year
12 Graduation on Friday 20th November. I look forward to chatting with parents and seeing our
students receive recognition for their achievements in these areas. Monday 19th October is the
final Pupil Free Day for the year and many of our staff will be at District and State Panel meetings
moderating Year 12 work in subject areas. At school, teachers not involved in this will be involved
in professional development regarding computers.
I cordially invite the school community to Awards Night on Wednesday 21st October. This
night is joyous, entertaining and highlights our students achievements.
All parents and Carers of Year 9 students will be receiving the 2009 National Assessment
Program, Literacy and Numeracy [NAPLAN] Test results next week. Bray Park SHS received
scores in all components [reading, writing, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy] above the
state average but while this is pleasing of course it must be remembered that this is just one record
in a whole series of information and parents should also look at school report cards for full
information.
As this is the first newsletter since my return from Long Service Leave, I would like to thank Mr
Evans for acting as Principal and Mrs Leadbetter for acting as Deputy during my absence.
We are well into preparations for 2010 and I ask that if you know of families who are intending to
enrol but havent as yet please advise them to so that we can create appropriate classes. Also, if
your students are not returning because they are going to enter the work force or the family is
moving do let us know as soon as possible.
Regards
Kate Abernethy
Principal
Letter to staff members, and parents and carers of students in Queensland schools
Dear Parent, Carer or Staff Member
As you may be aware, a national program to vaccinate Australians to protect against Pandemic
(H1N1) 2009 Influenza Virus, (Human Swine Flu) commenced on 30 September 2009.
The initial phase of the vaccination program is aimed at protecting people who are most vulnerable
to severe complications from infection with the pandemic influenza virus. The Commonwealth, in
conjunction with States and Territories, are strongly recommending vaccination for people aged 10
years and over who are in one of the following groups:
individuals with chronic disease (eg. heart, liver, renal, lung, kidney, neurological disease)
individuals with respiratory disease (eg. asthma)
individuals with immunosuppression
obese individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of over 35
children over the age of 10 attending special schools (including students with special needs
in regular school settings)
Indigenous Australians
pregnant women
parents and carers of children aged between 0 6 months
healthcare workers.
At this stage vaccination is only available to people 10 years of age and over. It is anticipated that
the data from the clinical trials for children will be available late October. Vaccination for children
will commence some time after this.
Although the focus is on protecting those in the vulnerable groups, the vaccine is available to all
those wanting to protect themselves in the community. Should you have any questions or concerns
about your or your childs eligibility for the vaccination, please contact your General Practitioner
(GP).
I urge you to visit your local GP to receive a free vaccination to help protect against this disease.
The cost of the vaccine is free, although GPs may charge a consultation fee. General Practice
Queensland (GPQ) has advised that most GPs will bulk bill for consultations solely for the purpose
of pandemic vaccination.
If you require further information on how to obtain the vaccine, please contact your local GP or visit
the Queensland Health vaccination website http://www.health.qld.gov.au/swineflu/html/vacc.asp
Yours sincerely
Dr Christine Selvey

school is happy to meet this request, it should be understood that this takes time and effort by the
office staff. Such requests have increased over time and, so that we are able to continue to offer
this service, it will now incur a charge of $5.50 for a report card or document to be replaced.
![]() If you would like to donate any old school uniforms, there is a collection bin at the office.
These uniforms will be donated to students in third world countries.
