Parent /Teacher Conferences Next Week
By now all families who have requested Parent/Teacher Conferences will have received a
confirmation slip via your child of your conference date and time. Please contact the school office if
you’re not sure of this information.  Please note the following organisational arrangements
regarding next week’s interviews:
1.
All conferences are scheduled in 15 minute timeslots. If you require more time following this
initial conference, please negotiate a mutually suitable time with your child’s class teacher.
2.
The start times for interviews need to be strictly adhered to. All conferences in the hall will
have synchronised start and finish times. Please check your conference commencement
time on the confirmation slip you should now have received.
3.
Please do not bring your child/ren or leave them unattended in the school grounds during
your conference period. Alternative off-campus arrangements need to be made.
4.
Preparatory year conferences are not scheduled next week. They are scheduled on a
different timeline to the Year 1-7 conferences. Prep families have been advised of their
biannual conference dates.
Thank you for the interest you have shown in your child’s education through participation in these
conferences. I am confident they will be mutually beneficial and further strengthen our school and
family partnerships which are vital for children to experience educational success.
Every Day Counts at Our School
Our school encourages all parents and members of our community to improve student attendance.
Education is compulsory for school age children in Queensland and the state government has
clearly indicated attendance requirements for all students and their families through the policy –
Every Day Counts which has four key messages:
all children should be enrolled and attend school on every school day
schools should monitor and create ways to improve attendance in schools
attendance is the responsibility of everyone in the community
children may find themselves in unsafe situations if they choose not to attend or skip
school.
While most students attend school consistently, there is a small number of students who are
absent from school without an acceptable reason and this may harm their education. Going
shopping, visiting family, staying up late and being tired or extending school holidays are not
acceptable reasons to be away from school.
Research shows that if your child has a record of good attendance, they are more likely to achieve
high results in the future.
Some families will have received a letter from me this week listing days their children have been
absent without an official reason being provided and inviting parents to provide retrospective
reasons for their absences. Sometimes, communication slip-ups both at home and school are the
causes of these unexplained absences. The best way to ensure information about student
absences gets to the office staff is to write and sign a note which is presented to the child’s teacher
or alternatively email us at admin@forelakess.eq.edu.au
For more information or if you need support regarding your child’s attendance you can contact me
directly (3714 1222) or download the guide for parents at
2010 Class Planning
The planning process for the 2010 school year has commenced. Consultation and discussion is
presently occurring before we finalise class structures and room allocations in mid-October. The
allocation of teachers to classes won’t occur until early December when all staff transfers and
appointments have been finalised. When placing our students into class groups for next year we
carefully consider each child’s individual needs.  These needs include:
Academic needs of the students
Any ‘special’ needs of the students, in terms of disabilities and learning needs
Social needs
Behaviour modification requirements
Previous class placements and
Maintaining “balances” within/among classes
If parents or caregivers wish to make a request concerning any of the points above, this must be
put in writing to me (John Faragher, jfara2@eq.edu.au ) by Friday September 11th 2009.
Please note:
1.
It is not possible to make requests for specific teachers.
2.
If you have had informal discussions with any administration or teaching staff regarding your
child’s 2010 class placement at any time this year, please ensure that you submit a written
request outlining the details of such prior discussions.
Congratulations Jim & Lachlan
Last week year 7 students Lachlan Cook and Jim Henjak represented Metropolitan West in the
State Primary Schoolboys’ Touch Championships which were held in Cairns. The Metropolitan
West team were runners-up to the Sunshine Coast 4-3 in a closely fought out final which went into
extra time. The State Schoolboys’ Team was announced following the carnival and the great news
was that Jim Henjak has been selected for Queensland honours. He receives our congratulations
for such a high level sporting achievement.
Student Records
At this stage of the school year our office staff are cross checking all student enrolment records for
currency of contact phone numbers, residential addresses, medical details and any court orders
pertaining to parental responsibility or custody of students.
If any of your child’s current details need changing you can make a phone call to the school office
with the new details with the information, with the exception of legal information in which case
an original copy of any court orders needs to be sighted and copied for our records by an office
staff member.
If you have previously provided us with a court order, please check the expiry date of any orders
we have on file as they are no longer applicable at school past the stated expiry date.
New Performing Arts Centre Progress
Late last month both myself and P&C President Andrew Rodgers signed off on behalf of the school
on the final plans for our $2.9 m Performing Arts Centre which has been funded through the
Federal Government Infrastructure Stimulus Program. The new facility will feature a fully fitted out
220 seat Performance Auditorium with adjoining music and drama classrooms. It will be located in
the bushland area between
the Hall and Kauri Place. All classroom music, choir and drama
activities will be hosted in the new facility. It will also enable our 180 instrumental students to
rehearse and perform in a state of the art venue with quality acoustics and storage facilities. This in
turn will free up our hall for many more indoor sports activities and uninterrupted access for our
Outside Hours Care Programs. The construction phase should commence in early September with
completion anticpated in March/April 2010.  Excerpts of the plans below give a good indication of
the quality of the new facility .

Guidance Officer News
Bullying comes in many forms but one of the most sinister forms is through technology (the internet
or mobile phones) in the form of MSM messaging, emails, face book etc. Psychologist Michael
Carr-Gregg is a founding member of the national centre for bullying. He works for Beyond Blue,
and he's also been called upon to help counsel the students in the latest loss of life through cyber
bullying. He states that cyber bullying is worse than school yard bullying as it can continue 24/7.
Because the bully doesn’t need to see its victim,
the bullying is often more intense, and more
frequent and can be far more damaging. Cyber bullying is difficult
to get away from as today’s
youth are in many ways so deeply dependent on their phones and computers to develop or
increase their social network, that banning them would be what the kids would call ‘social death’.
Here are some ideas:
Talk to your child about bullying – ask them if it has or is happening to them either face to
face or through the mobile or internet. If it is happening act now.
Supervise your child’s internet and mobile usage (with teenagers this may be more difficult
but as children need 8.25 to 9.25 hrs of good sleep each night encourage the mobile to be
turned off and left outside the bedroom.
Limit internet usage. Where possible have the computer in a public area.
Watch for changes in your child’s behaviour: Are they withdrawn or not themselves? Are
they sad/ tearful/angry/ not enjoying things they may have once enjoyed? Is school work
affected? These factors may indicate depression. It may also indicate that your child is
unwell.
As bullies thrive on secrecy, if you, the parent know about bullying then report it, to the
school or police and ensure follow up with you occurs.
Michael Carr-Gregg states that to help children be resilient:
They need to have an adult in their life with whom they feel safe (and will feel comfortable
talking to)
Children need to learn social and emotional skills – both at home and at school.
Provide a balanced life for your child – school is one part of their life. Involve them also in
the arts, music, sport, leisure.
Teach your child to self- talk positively – it’s just as easy to say something nice about
yourself as it is to put yourself down
If you need more help on this issue, these numbers may be useful: Lifeline131114 or
Beyond Blue 1300 224 636 or request a meeting with me at school.
All good wishes
