Well done, Tracy!
Bandanna Day for CanTeen
CanTeen is a national support organisation for young people (aged 12-24 years) living with cancer.
CanTeen was founded in 1985 by a group of young cancer patients supported by health
professionals. The touchstone of CanTeen is the belief that young people, through meeting and
talking with one another, are better able to cope with the uncertainities of a cancer diagnosis.
CanTeen relies on the generosity of the Australian public to continue to provide the programs and
services they offer to their growing member base across Australia. Bandannas are the symbol of
CanTeen - why bandannas? Certain forms of cancer treatment result in hair loss and many young
people choose to wear a bandanna during this time. It is for this reason that the bandanna was
chosen as a symbol for CanTeen.
Friday 30 October was Bandanna Day. We raised over $700 for CanTeen by selling bandannas at
school.
Rhiannon Kerr, one of our year 7 students, is currently living with cancer. Her fellow year 7
students, along with lots of other students and teachers, wore their bandanna on Friday 30 October
to support CanTeen and to show support for Rhiannon.

Queensland Youth Choir Auditions
The Queensland Youth Choir is looking for new member to join us for places in our 2010
performance ensembles next year. The Queensland Youth Choir provides a singing and
performance training program for young people from age five through to twenty-five. QYC is an
excellent learning environment for promising young singers, enabling them to develop their choral
abilities and socialise with others who share the same passion for music. Auditions will be held on
the 21st and 22nd November, applications must be received by 5pm on the 18th November.
An application form and further audition details are available from www.qldyouthchoir.com.au or
email admin@qldyouthchoir.com.au.
B105 Christmas Appeal
For some children and their families this Christmas will be spent in hospital. To help make their
hospital stay more bearable, the B105 team is calling on FLSS to help make a difference to the
lives of sick children. In the 15 years that B105 has been running this appeal, they have worked
wonders for many sick children through the generosity of communities like ours. Wonders like
funding research projects which are helping children with cystic fibrosis to live longer and the
purchase of vital rehabilitation equipment to improve the mobility of children who have sustained
injuries to their limbs, spinal cord and brain.
So, to help B105 work wonders for sick children this Christmas, we will be having a “Touch of
Christmas Day” on Friday 04 December. We would like to see children add a touch of Christmas
(or a celebration touch) to their uniform on Friday 04 December and for doing so, bring along a
gold coin as their donation to the Appeal. The addition to their uniform could be: the wearing of
holly in their hair, wear reindeer antlers, red and green socks, a Christmas badge etc. Children are
to wear their school uniform (this day is NOT a free dress day); the only exception would be the
wearing of red/green socks. If the “Christmas” theme is not appropriate for your child/children,
perhaps the wearing of something that symbolises “celebration” could be added to their uniform for
that day, so that we can celebrate the difference we will be contributing to for sick children.
Thank you from the teachers
Our teachers would like to thank the P&C for the gift of chocolates for Teachers’ Day – they were
very much appreciated!

Take the low carbon diet
Everyone has a part to play in addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas
emissions.
The Queensland Government’s Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland has set a target to reduce
the State’s household carbon footprint by a third by 2020.
One way that Queenslanders can reduce their individual carbon footprint is by participating in the
Low Carbon Diet program.
The program provides information and resources to encourage Queenslanders to work together to
reduce their carbon emissions and contribute to the global climate change solution.
The 30-day program helps people save money, energy and our environment by challenging
households to reduce their carbon emissions by 2000 kilos a year.
Some simple actions that households can take include:
only using the dishwasher when it’s full;
washing your clothes in a cold water wash;
hang washing on the line rather than using a dryer;
turning off the lights;
changing to energy saving light globes (CFLs); and
encouraging others to live ClimateSmart.
If your household is serious about wanting to address the impacts of climate change
in Queensland, now is the time to take action – register your interest for the Low Carbon Diet by
visiting the ClimateSmart website at

Active School Travel Celebration

The culmination of the work of many schools in Brisbane, for Active School Travel, was held at the
Convention Centre on Saturday 7th of November. Children enjoyed fun activities and some won
lucky door prizes, such as bicycles. Prizes were awarded for the competitions held during the year
and our finalists' artwork was on display, as were the entries of many schools in Brisbane.
The Lord Mayor spoke about the project which began in 2004 as a community project to help our
growing traffic congestion in Brisbane, especially around our schools. So to all the parents,
teachers and students who have helped to double our active travelling results this year, thank you
very much. It is for the safety and health of our children as well as our environment, that this
initiative has been introduced into Forest Lake.
A special thank you to the children and teachers who helped in our display at the stall. The year 7
students created the art display as well as the Multi Media Presentation, under the direction of the
teachers.

Chaplain’s Corner
What an amazing effort you all did towards Operation Christmas Child!  As a school we sent 54
boxes and heaps of extra boxes and bags that were overflowing, to Samaritan’s Purse who will
send these gifts overseas to poverty stricken children in various countries throughout the world.
There was $207.60 sent to help post these boxes which is a fabulous effort for our first whole
school time of doing this giving. It has begun a fabulous tradition of our own school community
caring for others beyond ourselves. This is “loving your neighbour as yourself” Well done and thank
you.
Also a special thank-you to mums, Dianne Higgins, Claudia Bajaj and Nicole Nielsen, who helped
repack the 54 boxes and prepare them for sending that last Thursday afternoon.
Scripture Union holds various camps over the school holidays and I have some brochures in my
office(C Block) with details of ages, dates and costs.
My official working days are Wednesday and Thursdays where I assist with choir, play with and am
available to children in the breaks for puzzles and string games, and chats, as well as Club 67 on
Thursday break for years 6 and 7s where we learn life-skills from Bible-based games and
discussions. The remainder of my time is allotted to assisting in various classrooms as a support to
children in their daily classroom activities.
My phone number is available from the office if you have a need to contact me, even outside work
hours.
A date for your diaries, Combined Churches are holding Christmas Carols at the Lake Stage in the
school holidays on Saturday 20th December. More information will be available later.
Have a peaceful term.

Ways to support your child’s resiliency
The resiliency wheel is a quick guide to assist you in encouraging resiliency and coping in your
children:
The Resiliency Wheel

The left side of the wheel is an amalgamation of the three elements for building resiliency identified
by Bernard in her synthesis of research on resilient students. These elements deal with building
resiliency within the environment:

Care and Support: Includes unconditional positive regard, support, and encouragement. This part
of the wheel is the most significant, as this is where the relationship begins.

High Expectations: This includes making sure that young people understand that we believe they
can be successful in their own right; as well as providing the resources for them to do so.

Opportunities to participate: This includes giving young people the opportunities to demonstrate
their competence and eagerness to contribute to the classroom functions in meaningful ways.

The elements on the right hand side of the wheel are adapted from the works of Hawkins, Catalano
and Miller, and highlight the protective factors that they believe mitigate risk and deal with risk
within the environment.

Prosocial bonding: This includes increasing positive connections between children, their peers,
and adults within the environment.

Clear boundaries and expectations: This includes policies and rules which govern a student’s
behaviour. They need to be consistently fair, whilst developing a youths input.

Life skills: Includes skills of decision making, communication and stress management. Schools
need to prepare students, for life after school.
All good wishes
