Welcome back to term four and a warm welcome to our new families.
NAPLAN Results
All parents of students in years 3, 5 and 7 should have received their child's NAPLAN Report for
2009.
We received a letter written by the Premier, Anna Bligh, and the Minister for Education and
Training, Geoff Wilson, and I would like to quote from this:
'Your school has done well. When compared with your 2008 results, your school has shown
significant improvement in areas of the testing. We would like to commend you and your
teachers on the encouraging results that have been achieved in the 2009 NAPLAN tests. These
results are heading in the right direction and we ask that you convey our thanks to your teachers
and parents for the intensive effort that has secured this important outcome for your school
community.'
Australian Mathematics Competition
Congratulations to the 141 students who participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition
in August.  Results have been distributed.  Our students achieved two High Distinctions, sixteen
Distinctions, 47 Credits, 17 Proficiencies and 59 Certificates of Participation.  Well done
everybody!  Special congratulations go to Kevin Nguyen in Year 7 who received a Prudence
Award for his sensational results.
Our school community raised $850.00 on Tuesday
in the Gold Coin Donation Day, for the
Samoan/Indonesian Communities.
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
Year 7 trip to Sydney and Canberra
Our year 7s had a very enjoyable time in Sydney/Canberra - they survived the cold weather
they experienced in Canberra!
Supervision before school
While students are encouraged to arrive in ample time for the beginning of class, it is urged that
parents do not send children to school too early as no supervision is provided before school.
Unless a student has a musical or sport practice before school, no student should be arriving
before 8.30am.
Mobile Phones/iPods and other undesirable items at school
Below are two paragraphs taken from the 'Parent Information Booklet 2009'. While it might be
tempting for students to bring along a new gadget/toy received as a present (eg. birthday),
these items unfortunately can be lost, broken or taken by another student.
I strongly suggest that these items are NOT brought to school.
MOBILE PHONES/iPODS etc
Electronic goods and music devices are not to be brought to school by students.  The
use of student mobile phones is only permitted outside of school hours (8.55am-3.00pm),
for parental/caregiver communications only. If it is necessary for students to bring mobile
phones to school, students are responsible for these items.
UNDESIRABLE ITEMS AT SCHOOL
Parents should ensure that their children do not bring to school undesirable items such
as pen knives, toy guns, valuable toys or jewellery.  Dangerous items will be confiscated
immediately and parents will be contacted to collect the item.
Active School Travel
Walking Wheeling Wednesdays is being extended to Thursdays, starting today!
Each Thursday, students who travel actively to school will receive a raffle ticket at the gate.
They will place their name on it before giving it to their teacher.  A ticket from each class will be
drawn each Thursday and the winner will receive a handball. This will continue for 4 weeks.

From Queensland Health - Swine Flu Vaccination
Letter to parents and carers of students in Queensland schools
Dear Parent/Carer
As you may be aware, a national program to vaccinate Australians to protect against Pandemic
(H1N1) 2009 Influenza Virus, (Human Swine Flu) commenced on 30 September 2009.
The initial phase of the vaccination program is aimed at protecting people who are most
vulnerable to severe complications from infection with the pandemic influenza virus. The
Commonwealth, in conjunction with States and Territories, are strongly recommending
vaccination for people aged 10 years and over who are in one of the following groups:
- individuals with chronic disease (eg. heart, liver, renal, lung, kidney, neurological disease)
- individuals with respiratory disease (eg. asthma)
- individuals with immunosuppression
- obese individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of over 35
- children over the age of 10 attending special schools (including students with special needs
in regular school settings)
- Indigenous Australians
- pregnant women
- parents and carers of children aged between 0 - 6 months
- healthcare workers.
At this stage vaccination is only available to people 10 years of age and over. It is anticipated
that the data from the clinical trials for children will be available late October. Vaccination for
children will commence some time after this.
Although the focus is on protecting those in the vulnerable groups, the vaccine is available to all
those wanting to protect themselves in the community. Should you have any questions or
concerns about your or your child's eligibility for the vaccination, please contact your General
Practitioner (GP).
I urge you to visit your local GP to receive a free vaccination to help protect against this disease.
The cost of the vaccine is free, although GP's may charge a consultation fee. General Practice
Queensland (GPQ) has advised that most GPs will bulk bill for consultations solely for the
purpose of pandemic vaccination.
If you require further information on how to obtain the vaccine, please contact your local GP or
visit the Queensland Health vaccination website
Yours sincerely
Dr Christine Selvey

Alcohol and the Early Effects on Children
Did you know?
Pregnancy and alcohol don't mix. There is no safe time to drink alcohol during pregnancy and
there is no safe amount of alcohol. Alcohol can harm a baby for life.
If the mother drinks alcohol as the baby's brain is being developed (especially between the 2
nd
and 8th week of pregnancy) there is a risk that the baby may develop Foetal Alcohol Syndrome
(FAS) or Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This leads to smaller babies, heart defects,
unusual facial features and general delays in development and learning as well as behaviour
problems.
Alcohol in a mother's blood crosses over to the baby through the placenta so that the baby will
have the same blood alcohol as the mother. While the 2nd to 8th week of pregnancy is a very
crucial time it is also a time when most women may not be aware they are pregnant. While most
women who drink a little alcohol during pregnancy (1 or less standard drinks per day) will have
babies who have not been affected by alcohol some babies have been affected by very small
amounts of alcohol.
Stopping drinking alcohol at any stage of pregnancy improves the outlook for a baby's
development and will increase the chances of having a healthy baby.
As we do not know what a safe level of alcohol consumption is during pregnancy less alcohol is
better but no alcohol is the best and safest choice to ensure your child has the best possible
start in life.
All good wishes

Chaplain's Corner
To those who lost friends and loved ones through the various disasters over the holidays, I offer
my condolences. These tragedies have caused shock waves around the world, as well as
causing individual reflections upon the preciousness of life and living each day as though it truly
counts.
We have seen many countries and individuals come to help in rescue attempts and provide aid.
This is showing 'Love your neighbour as yourself' as it was meant to be.
There have been many opportunities to give finance, and household items, as I'm sure many of
you have done.
We have a two week window of opportunity to help others too through the Samaritan's Purse
which a few classes were involved in last year. Each class could combine efforts to fill one
Christmas Box for one child, either girl or boy of a set age, which then gets sent to countries in
need. It would be great if it were more, but if we begin a tradition of caring for others outside of
ourselves, we can feel like we are contributing as a school to other communities beyond
ourselves. A small request list will come home for your child to provide one item for their class
box, if you can manage to, or a coin towards the postage. Thank you.
My phone number is available from the office if you need me. A parent rang the other day as
they had multiple pet tragedies over the holidays, so I was able to offer comfort and guidance to
the child. I am not a counselor, but I can be a mediator and provide important helpline numbers
and highlight various community supports available to you.
Tell someone you care about that you love them. :)
Have a great term,
Chaplain Lyz
