School Bullying Issues
In this time of heightened awareness of violence in schools, I would like to reassure all parents and
carers that our school takes a tough stance on bullying. We do not tolerate any form of violence or
harassment. As Principal, it is my number one priority that every student feels safe in our
supportive school environment.
I have reminded all students that bullying behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at this
school. I ask that parents take some time this week to speak with their children about bullying and
to remind them of the importance of treating others with fairness, dignity and respect. I also
encourage all parents and adult caregivers not to model such behaviours as this is often the
starting point for children to develop bullying behavioural patterns.
If you believe your child is being bullied or may be involved in bullying another student, I also urge
you to contact me to discuss the ways we can help to address this behaviour.
Our school community has a number of programs to combat bullying and harassment which
include developing student resilience through the High Five student interactive strategies and You
Can Do It Social Skills program which we undertake across all year levels. In the early years, all
students are involved in the highly acclaimed Fun Friends program, which equips students with life
skills that build resilience and social-emotional strength to cope with stresses and challenges that
are a part of everyday life. We also regularly engage external presenters to present our students
with strategies to cope with real life scenarios they may find themselves facing which may lead to
harassment, bullying or personal harm. Bravehearts is an example of an organisation that works
with our students on a regular basis.
For more information on these programs, please contact the school office.
The consequence of school suspension and in more serious cases, exclusion, awaits any students
who continue to demonstrate bullying/harassment type behaviours against either other students or
school staff members on our campus. Presently we are updating our School Responsible
Behaviour Plan to include consequences and strategies to address cyber-bullying including the use
of personal mobile phones and electronic devices. This information will be accessible by the end of
the term on our school website www.forelakess.eq.edu.au .
Forest Lake State School takes very seriously its responsibility to keep our students safe and to
ensure our school community is free from bullying, harassment and violence.
I urge any parents and carers who are concerned about bullying to contact me directly. My direct
email is jfara2@eq.edu.au .
Second Crossing Supervisor at Woogaroo St
The good news is that our newly approved second crossing supervisor has taken up duties at the
Woogaroo Street crossing. In the mornings, one supervisor will be at the edge of the road near the
car park and the other at the cage exit on the school side. In the afternoons, one will be at the
school side kerb and the other at the cage exit on the car park side. The main change is that
pedestrians will now not stop in the middle of the "cage" and will continue to the opposite side of
the road. If the crossing supervisors ask you to stop please do so, as they have been instructed to
break up pedestrians into smaller groups (particularly in the afternoons). This will hopefully allow
smooth pedestrian movement and easier traffic flow. The "lollipop" people are there for the
children's safety so please stay behind the yellow line, wait for the whistle to cross and listen to
them if they need you to stop or break up into smaller groups.
Congratulations Lachlan
Lachlan Cooke (Year 7) is Australia's fastest 12 year old boy in cross country, as of last weekend,
when he competed and won at the National Cross Country Championships in NSW.
Fantastic result, Lachlan!
P&C Fund Raising Team
I'd like to acknowledge the many hours that the parents of our P&C Fund Raising team willingly
give to our school in our endless quest to enhance school facilities. You'll notice in each
edition of
the newsletter the many fund raising initiatives being undertaken by the team under the excellent
direction of coordinator Margie Nightingale. They deserve your support, particularly if can offer
assistance for the upcoming school disco being held next Friday Sept 11.
With regards
John Faragher
Principal
A proposal for a child being retained in a year level is the result of ongoing observations and
discussions throughout the year between the parent or carer, class teacher and relevant specialist
personnel. It is not a decision taken lightly, given the potential for negative impact on self-esteem,
for students of all ages.
The intention is that with this extra year, the child should show significant academic improvement
without negative impact on social relationships and emotional well-being.
Extending time in a year level may be considered when:
- temporary external factors have impacted on the child's capacity to access the curriculum
- large periods of schooling have been missed due to illness, travel or change of school
If you are contemplating requesting that your child be considered for year level retention we
strongly recommend reading a research article into the area, which is available from the office.
If you believe your child needs to be considered, please discuss this with your child's teacher prior
to the end of the first week of Term 4. The Special Needs committee will then oversee the
process in determining whether retention is to be recommended. Copies of the school policy and
information about repeating Prep are available from the office.

Have you purchased your tickets for our "double bill" Musicals
to be performed next Tuesday and
Wednesday evenings? As per the advertisement in this Newsletter edition, the Year 5-7 students
will be performing Disney's "Jungle Book Kids" whilst they will be supported by a mini musical
performance of "3 of a Kind" by our in Y
ears 3 and 4 students. Both shows are really looking good
in final rehearsals. You'll experience a great night's entertainment from our very talented students
On Tuesday 8th September, this season's interschool sport teams, Semester 2 School Captains
and House Captains and any new year 7 students who have enrolled since Photo Day (29 April)
will have their photographs taken.

PERSONAL SAFETY AND PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOURS
National Child Protection Week (6th - 12th September) provides an opportunity for adults to
reinforce key messages about protective behaviours (feeling, acting and being safe) in an age-
appropriate way to all children. While schools have a key role to play in this regard, we also
acknowledge that parents and caregivers have a shared responsibility to address this topic within
the home setting. To assist with this educative process, outlined below are some suggestions
which may be of assistance:
- Establish a personal action plan if approached by a stranger.
- Don't engage in any conversation with them. Move away.
- If a stranger does approach you and you feel unsafe, what will you do? [Drop your school bag
and run, scream for help (What words to use?, Where to go?) Identify people who you can trust
(teachers, known neighbours and friends, the police)].
- Safe places you can go on the way home when you feel threatened or unsafe.
- What to do if they come across a friend or another child who is at risk (how to help the other
person without becoming a potential victim themselves).
- Ensure that your child is able to recall up to date and accurate contact numbers for home and
parents/caregivers workplaces to provide to a teacher or police officer if an incident does occur
going to or from school.
- Try to let the school know if you will be late collecting children after school so that they can wait
in a safe location within the school.
- If at all possible, arrange for younger students to travel to and from school with a trusted adult,
or at least an older student.
- Be careful about displaying your child's name prominently on the outside of school bags, on
caps and school clothing. This information can easily be misused by a stranger to gain a child's
trust.
- Revisit the subject of personal safety and protective behaviours on a regular basis to stress the
importance of always being vigilant around strangers.
For more information, visit the Queensland Police Service website at www.police.qld.gov.au .
This site provides parents and caregivers with a useful introduction and overview of the Protective
Behaviour program. [On the QPS Home Page, select Programs, then Protective Behaviours
from the drop down menu at the top of the screen].
As your school Guidance Officer I am also able offer further advice upon request.

![]() ![]() Not long now until the musicals! I am helping with the Junior Choir and prop preparations for the
performance. It really is a fun musical. Hope you've bought tickets.
This term I am working twice with the Prep classes, and each of the Year 1 classes weekly and I
am catching up with the Year 5s again, one of them doing PE, as well as continuing my
involvement with 6C. I do have some individual students that I see weekly or occasionally too.
I have had some parents ask me about Youth Groups in the Forest Lake area, so I have been
researching these. One Friday I attended the Salvation Army "Fun Fridays" between 3:30 and
5:30pm, where I met some of our FLSS children and we sure had fun! Fun Fridays caters for
children from Prep to Year 4. Another Youth Group in Forest Lake is held in our school hall on a
Friday night by the combined Baptist and Uniting Churches for Year 5-12 from 7:30-9:30pm,
during term times. I visited that one another Friday night recently and met heaps of children from
our school there, so if you are looking for a youth group for your children, check these out - they're
bound to make a new friend.
Coming up the weekend after next on 12th September is another great family day out, a fun run!
(Some of the teachers and others of you would have participated in the Bridge to Brisbane and be
seeking another fun day out.) It is held at greater Springfield and can be checked out at
www.gsrunforlife.org.au. Funds could go to Chaplaincy if mentioned upon registration. Please
state FLSS.
Keep an eye on the bulletin board outside the tuckshop for some up-coming workshops for
parents, put on by various organizations. eg. "Building Emotional Resilience in the Anxious Child"
3rd October.
Enjoy the remainder of the term.
Chaplain Lyz
Children's author and illustrator, Martin Chatterton, visited our school last week to talk to all year 4s
about the books that he has written and illustrated. He spoke about his childhood in England and
how he started drawing when he was only 3 years old. He said how he went to art school to learn
techniques and how he developed ideas for his books. Martin showed us some of his books and
illustrations. He was very funny and drew some funny pictures of our students. We enjoyed his visit
and wanted to borrow and read his books.
From 4D and 4E Classes
![]() Our Prep and Year One students will be investigating the ocean and sea creatures and we would
appreciate any donations of shells or sea animal rubber models. If your children have grown out of
these and you would like to donate them, it would be really appreciated. We are also accepting
donations of Lego that is still in good condition and may longer be needed. If you can help out,
please send your items to the Curriculum Room.
