National Literacy and Numeracy Testing Results
In May this year our students joined around one million students across Australia in Years 3, 5, 7
and 9 and participated in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
tests for reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
This week, NAPLAN results have been distributed to all participating schools in the country. I'm
very pleased to advise that our school has again performed strongly in all areas. The table below
shows how well our students performed in comparison to national and state averages.

Every student who participated in the 2009 NAPLAN test will receive an individual report containing
their results which should be distributed by the end of this week.
This report provides a range of information about your child's performance on each of the literacy
and numeracy tests. It also contains a detailed guide on what was assessed in each test and how
to interpret these results. Parents and carers are encouraged to thoroughly read the report and the
explanatory notes.

If you have any questions or concerns about NAPLAN testing, please contact the school office.
School Musicals Congratulations
Many families attended our School Musical Evenings last week and I'm sure they were as
impressed as I was with the performances of both "The Jungle Book Kids" (Years 5-7) and "3
of a Kind" (Years 3-4). These performances represented months of rehearsals and behind the
scenes assistance from school staff and parent helpers. Congratulations and thank you to
everyone involved. We've got some great talent at FLSS!
![]() Farewell and Thanks to Mrs Graham
Last Friday I was advised that teacher Mrs Fiona Graham has been appointed to a Regional
Literacy & Numeracy coaching position in Greater Brisbane Region to be based at Moorooka
and Yeronga State Schools. This is a well deserved appointment. Mrs Graham takes up duties
from the start of next term. On behalf of everyone at FLSS, I wish Mrs Graham the very best and
thank her for all her great work at FLSS over the past 12 years.
Acting Principal Term 4
From this week until October 30, I have been asked to act in the position of Executive Director of
Schools in Moreton East . In my absence, Deputy Principal Ms Kay Hogan will be acting in the
principal position. I anticipate returning to duties at FLSS on Monday November 2.
With regards
John Faragher
Principal
![]() Congratulations to Lachlan Cook (7D) on being very successful (coming first!) in the 800m event at
the Metropolitan West 12 Years Athletics Carnival which was held Tuesday 1st and Wednesday
2nd September. Lachlan will now compete at the State Track and Field Championships to be held
on 20th and 21st October. We wish Lachlan the very best!
On Friday, 4th September, 22 students in six teams competed in the Brisbane South Chess
Tournament at McGregor State School. Forest Lake 1 team with Cooper Carmichael, Chris
Clayton, Chris Chiou and Kurt Schloss played in the top Premier Division. Last term Forest Lake
had come first in the Moreton Region and therefore represented the Region in the Brisbane South
finals. The boys did very well beating Ormiston College (Brisbane East champions) and
Loganholme (Logan champions). The five other Forest Lake teams played in the A grade section
of the Open Division and everyone had a successful day, with Tarran Kerr receiving a ribbon in the
awards presentation.
Kay Mills
Chess Coordinator
Students in Year 4B have made animated movies of a Dreamtime Creation story as part of their
studies in SOSE. In groups they made Storyboards, took over 200 photos, and edited these in a
sequence to produce a stop motion animation. Five movies were entered into the Online Animation
Festival, one of which has been selected for the finals in the Year 4 -
7 category.
Judges' comments: The Echidna animation created by Abbey, Bill, Joel and Samuel was
successful in reaching the finals. They did a great job in terms of constructing their characters and
telling the story with their stop motion. It was very hard picking between many of the entries and
the scoring was extremely close. The entries were judged by a group of teachers and students.
This is an event hosted by the Learning Place which is run by Education Queensland. Schools
from all over Queensland are involved.
Congratulations to all the moviemakers!

What is Mental Health?
Mental Health is a positive state of wellbeing used to describe emotional and social wellness. It
involves feeling positive about ourselves, the people and events in our lives, and being able to live
life to our fullest capacity.
Our mental health influences everything we do:
-
How we think, feel and behave
-
The way we relate to other people
-
The way we respond to the challenges of everyday life; and
-
How we cope with events such as changing jobs, having a baby, retirement, loss and
physical illness
Things to do to improve your mental health
-Exercise daily -at least for 30 minutes
-Eat healthy foods - avoid drinking too much coffee, eating too much fat, and sugars
-Visit your doctor regularly to ensure good health
-Build a community around yourself - having people to talk to makes life happier and more
enjoyable
-Keep busy and involved - in family, school, work, leisure
-Drink plenty of water
-Have adequate sleep
-Seek help if you are feeling down, don't let the blues take over you
-Be kind to yourself - do things that you enjoy eg. a relaxing bath, take a movie, go to dinner
-Do things for other people - not only will they benefit but it is a boost for you as well
-Practise thinking good thoughts, avoid bad thoughts
-Watch comedy shows, seek out humour, laugh loudly
Mental health is an essential part of our overall health and affects our physical health; as our
physical health also affects our mental health. It is also strongly related to our behaviour,
particularly our social behaviour and relationships with others. So put the effort in, work to be
mentally healthy and provide good role models on self care to the children we live/ work with.
All good wishes
Debra

CRAFT STALL - GRAND AVENUE FETE October 10th
We are holding a craft stall this year at the Grand Avenue Fete. Thank you to those who have
donated craft items or a gold coin for this event. We still need more donations. These can be
dropped off at the tuckshop. To make this event a success we need helpers to man the stall.
Please complete the helper form attached if you are able to help out for an hour or so from
11.30am to 5.30pm.
DISCO
Our Boot Scootin' Wild West Disco went well. We had lots of cowboys and costumes. Our new
glow products were a hit. There will be a larger range at the next disco. Thank you to those
families who helped out on the night. All help is greatly appreciated and contributes to a fun night
for all involved.
CAR BOOT SALE
There were bargains to be had at our car boot sale and this was a great way for the P&C and
individual families to all raise a little extra cash. A big thank you to those who helped coordinate
this big event. Thank you also to the businesses that supported our school by holding a stall. We
are planning for this to be a regular event.
COOKIE DOUGH DRIVE
Back by popular demand is the Billy G Cookie Dough Drive - you will be receiving order forms at
the beginning of next term.
CHOCOLATE DRIVE
There are still families who have not yet returned their outstanding chocolate money. We would like
to have this finalised by the end of term. If you have not already paid can you please return
payment a.s.a.p. All outstanding chocolate money is due back now. Ensure your child's name
and class are clearly marked and place in a snaplock bag (these are available at the tuckshop) and
place the money into the lock box at the tuckshop.
CRAFT STALL GRAND AVENUE FETE
CAN YOU HELP?
We need helpers to man our stall. Saturday 10th October
from 11.30am - 5.30pm.
If you can spare an hour or more please complete the form
below and return to the tuckshop. Your help is greatly
appreciated.
As you have time on the holidays with your children, try to truly connect with them. You are
teaching your children simply as they observe you. I heard a great message recently about being
aware of, and using all your senses for good teaching. Sight: watch what you watch (and your
children) and be aware that you are being watched by your children and others around you. Sound:
What are you listening to and what are others hearing come out of your mouth. Does it edify or pull
down? Smell: What fragrance does your life emanate? Is it one where there is a sweet aroma left
behind after you've been with people or are they glad that you've left the roo with your stinky
attitude? Taste: What are you having a taste of that perhaps you shouldn't? There are activities
that you know won't bring you happiness in the end if you pursue them. Why not try some new
activities that stimulate the whole family to have fun, e.g. Climb a small mountain, go fishing
together, make a cubby under the dining table and all have dinner under there. (These cost nothing,
but leave a pleasant flavour of that time in all your memory banks.) Touch: Such a vital sense for
everyone to be touched in a positive manner. Family can especially meet this need. Tickling, fun
wrestling on the carpet, back rubs in front of the TV. Your presence in children's lives means so
much in this busy world. Try to be "present" when you are there in mind and heart, not just in the
bodily sense. Have fun!
Be aware: Life, be in it!
Enjoy the break and return refreshed and renewed,
Chaplain Lyz
The uniform shop is open Monday and Fridays 8.45am to 10.45am.
The next few months are the perfect time to bring in any items that you want to sell. There is a
20% commission on all items that we sell for you. Generally items that are in good condition sell
round 50% of the retail price and then the sell price goes down according to the condition of the
item.
A few tips to make your items sell quicker.
1.
Wash and iron the items especially if they have been sitting in the cupboard for a while.
2.
Mend hems and buttons. (Most people buying 2nd hand items do not want to have to mend
them.)
If the item has holes in it, lots of paint stains, is faded and thin these generally don't sell and you
may like to think of donating them as emergency clothing. 2nd hand items that have not sold after
6 months can be either donated to the school or returned to the owner.
Remember have a good look at the uniform and if you would not buy it for your child then
the chances are no one else will either.
If you cannot make it into the shop you can order by credit card over the phone and I will deliver
the items to your child's classroom. If you are phoning through an order, please phone after 10am,
as it is very busy first thing in the morning. (Phone 3714-1256)
Lay-by, EFTPOS and credit card facilities available.
Yvonne
Once again the lost property is vast. It has all been sorted out and any named items have been
returned to your child's classroom. All unnamed items are currently in a box outside the tuckshop
and will remain there until Friday 18th September when it will be taken and donated to charity.
