PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome to Term 3
I would like to welcome all of our families back following the June/July holidays and hope that you
had an enjoyable break. I would particularly like to welcome the Connor, Payne, Dacre, Agassiz,
Delamare, King MaKianu, Feriu MaKianu, Atkins, Punter, Emblem and Hiroti families who have
joined our school community this term. This is the first newsletter for term three and already there
is a lot that has occurred that I’m sure will be of interest to all parents.
Staff Professional Development
On the Student Free Day following the holidays, all of our Teachers were involved in Professional
Development activities relating to the “First Steps Mathematics Program”. Most Teachers have
now completed this 18 hour course and I commend them on their committed and professional
approach to the training. It is our students who will benefit from this increased expertise.
Outcomes of School and Community Meeting
The following table displays the main priorities identified by parents and staff at the School and
Community Meeting held at the beginning of June. While this is not the full list of issues identified,
they are the ones that were most strongly voted for by the participants. The two figures beside the
priorities eg.+- 35 (13) indicate the total number of votes an item received and beside it the number
of people that voted for that item. Participants were able to vote on a 3, 2, 1 basis to gauge the
strength of feeling around certain issues. While not all of these issues may be able to be
addressed, they will form the basis of our strategic planning over the next few years.
Once again, I would like to thank all the parents and staff who made the time to participate in this
valuable activity for our school. If you would like to discuss any of the results or process with me
please phone the school and make an appointment. Likewise anyone wanting a full list of the
issues and the votes, let me know and I will happily provide you with a copy.

Interhouse Athletics
Congratulations to Wallaba House who won the Interhouse Athletics Carnival for 2009.  It was a
very close run carnival, especially between the top 2 houses - Wallaba and Amaroo. The final
Points tally was as follows:
Wallaba
1112
Amaroo
1108
Koorong
920
It was a great day for the carnival– blue skies and pleasant temperatures (apart from that cold wind
on a couple of the days) and the students were enthusiastic participants and they were to be
congratulated on their entusiasm, behaviour and sportsmanship. It was gratifying to see the
number of parents and families in attendance to support their students and  house teams. My
thanks to Mr Gislingham for the massive amount of time and effort he put into organising the
carnival, to Mr Sellars and the staff for the roles they played in setting up and packing up after the
carnival as well as the important roles they played as officials and marshalls during the day and in
training the students during the term.  The great teamwork at Gaven ensured a successful day -
well done! The following students won the age champion medals for their respective age groups:

Annual Report
At the end of term 2 the Gaven State School’s Annual Report was posted on the school’s website. I
encourage parents who can access the report to take a moment to consider the progress our
school made in the 2008 school year. If you don’t have access to the internet, a paper copy of the
report can be obtained by contacting the school office.
Prep Enrolments for 2010
Enrolments for the 2010 Preparatory Year will now be taken for eligible children; that is, children
born in the period 01 July 2004 to 30 June 2005. Enrolment Packs are available for collection from
the school office. The enrolment process will include:
- Completion of the enrolment form by a parent
- Submission of the enrolment form with attached copy of a birth certificate or equivalent
(mandatory before enrolment will be accepted)
- An interview with the Principal or Deputy Principal
Please bring this notice to the attention of neighbours, relatives or friends who may not yet have
direct contact with Gaven State School of this information, if they have a child who will be eligible
to enrol in 2010. A parents’ information session is planned for November.
Head Lice and Worms
Letters regularly go out to inform parents of head lice breakouts in classrooms and by and large
parents are very thorough in checking their students hair for these annoying pests.  Likewise it is
important to be on the look out for signs of intestinal worms.  Many parents already give students
worm medication on a regular, eg monthly basis, and these are available from chemists.  Some of
the signs of worms include an itchy bottom, children fidgeting or not being able to sit still, and lack
of focus and concentration.  Consequently this easily fixed problem can affect student learning.  If
you notice these signs it may be a sign of worms and a quick trip to the chemist to fix the problem.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is in full swing and you should start seeing your child begin to
devour various books. Remember to record and sign off each book your child has read. Ask them
questions about each book to help understand their reading interests.  If you need any information,
reading card or book lists they are available from the Administration Office.  Any child that has
returned their form to the Administration Office to say that they would be completing the challenge
has been registered on the website and the student reading card will be also entered when it is
received.  Good reading. Each child involved will receive a signed certificate from the Premier at
the end of the Challenge.
Education Tax Refund – Don’t Forget to Claim
How do I claim the Education Tax Refund?
- In your tax return.
- If you don't lodge a tax return, claim on a separate form or over the phone.
- If you use a tax agent, make sure you ask them to claim for you.
The Education Tax Refund lets you claim up to 50 per cent of eligible education expenses for
school children. If you are eligible, you can get back up to $375 for each primary student and up to
$750 for each secondary student. You can claim things like text books, stationery and even
internet costs. Remember, you need to keep all receipts for expenses you claim. If you receive

other people are eligible too. To find out more about this and other information such as what you
can and can't claim go to www.australia.gov.au/educationtaxrefund or call the Tax Office on 13 28

side where over half the players were Year Sixes.
I would like to congratulate the boys for all their hard training this year. Also a special thanks to the

very important health screening, please complete and sign the consent section of the Health
History Card sent home with your child and return this to your child’s class teacher as soon as
possible.
Children in Year 1 to 7 that have a vision or hearing concern may also be seen by the nurse.
Children may be referred by a parent or teacher however all children must have a Health History
card completed and signed by the parent.  A Health History card is available from the school office.
