Principal's Ponderings

Dear Parents and friends,

Isn't the weather wonderful? Praise be to our God for the wonderful days for our sports carnival last week. My "tongue in cheek" comment that sports days are my favourite days was taken literally by many of the children and parents. "Are you enjoying your favourite day?" they would ask. Caught out not telling the truth, I had much explaining to do. Actually the days went well. Thanks children for being in the right places and for the teachers for being vigilant. Miss Diprose does a great job of organizing these days and for the cheerful smile. Of course we all enjoy the P/3 Tabloid. I saw parents out there having a go on some of the equipment.

Mind you, sports days are her favourite days until the questions start. "Miss Diprose, did you say 9s or 10s?" "Miss Diprose, can I take my shoes off." "Miss Diprose, is this the 100 or 200 metre race?" "Miss Diprose, where do I go now?" I heard her give out an "AARRGH!!!!" at one point.

Why are they NOT my favourite day? Well for 44 years I have been chosen for crowd control. That means being the grouch and finding the children who are not doing the right thing or running and playing when they should be listening or lining up for races. It means getting the lost property back to the right owner. There are the times when children who have done the wrong thing escape to mum and stand there watching the dilemma this places on us as teachers as to who has the discipline rights and just how severely does one tell them what they did was wrong. Yep. I stand by my statement. Children should spend all day in school behind desks and do sports and fun on the weekend. (Well....maybe not all the time.)

Lost property is easy to look after if it has a name. Even if the name is an older brother or sister in secondary school I can sort it out because after all the years here I know who is who. But no name means seeking someone to claim a jumper over the loud speaker. It is amazing. Everyone knows they have a hat and claim hats straight away. But there were at least 10 jumpers with no name and no claimers. Children simply did not come and get them. They had probably forgotten they wore one to school.

Now the point of this message is two fold.

1. Please put names on all clothing. Save an oldie like me from frustration.

The first one is easy to do. Names on a hat or jacket and they shouldn't get lost. At least we should have a better chance of finding them.

2. The moral of the story comes from Revelation 21:27 where it explains Heaven.
Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but
only those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

The second is easy to do. All of us are the ones who do shameful and deceitful things. To heal the relationship with our God and have our names written in His book we accept the sacrifice He made for us in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. We will know for sure then, that our names are indelibly written by Him and we will be found in Heaven at the end. No lost souls those who have their names recorded. We won't be lost.

Remember the change of car parking arrangements. Reports out next week.

Chaplain's Chat

I love reading the Book of Psalms in the Bible. Although they were written many years ago, they are so relevant for our lives today. For example in Psalm 91 verses 14-16:

The Lord says, "I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honour them.
I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation."

What a great promise God gives us for our lives today. If you are finding life tough at this time why not call out to the Lord for help. He is willing to answer your call and be with you through your situation.

This Sunday night at Mueller Community Church we are continuing a series on "Dealing with life's issues" The talk this week is titled "Rejection: When you're not wanted." The service starts at 6.00pm and you and your family are most welcome to come.

June Holidays and Swine Flu

There may be a number of staff and/or students going overseas during the coming vacation. The following summary information is given regarding their subsequent return to Australia and school.

Staff: Upon arrival back in Australia passengers are assessed by Qld Health and given advice regarding their health - which must be complied with. If advised to stay at home for 7 days, let the principal know as soon as possible. After this period you must submit medical documentation to the effect that you are now clear to return to work.

If no restrictions were placed on you by Qld Health you should return immediately to work - no seven-day time-out period is required.

If you subsequently develop flu-like symptoms you should immediately leave the workplace and seek medical advice and keep the principal informed of developments. A medical clearance is required before returning to work.

School Students: upon return, students are required to remain in home isolation for 7 days after travel to an ‘affected area' - whether the student has flu-like symptoms or not.

(Current) affected areas: USA, Canada, Panama, Mexico, Japan - and now the state of Victoria. Hence students going to Victoria during the vacation must observe the seven-day school time-out period.

Please be alert to the possibility of any staff or students going overseas or to Victoria and communicate this to the principal and school administration so that the above requirements can be met.

The Department of Health continues to reiterate the importance of personal hygiene (frequent hand washing, covering the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, sneezing and coughing into a tissue and disposing of the tissue) to reduce the spread of H1N1. It also suggests that people with flu symptoms should seek medical advice. A poster outlining good hygiene procedures is available at Queensland Health:

Chocolate Drive

Forms have been handed out to students for the chocolate drive.

Please ensure that all forms are returned to Textbook Hire Centre N2 by Friday 26th June, 2009 so that we know what your wishes are with regard to who is to receive chocolates or not.

PLEASE ENSURE ALL YOUR STUDENTS NAMES ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FORM SO THAT WE CAN GUARANTEE ONLY THOSE WHO ARE MEANT TO HAVE CHOCOLATES ACTUALLY RECEIVE THEM. (We need to be able to cross off the roll who is not to receive them).

Chocolates will be given to students after they return from holidays in July.

We have received a lot of forms with a box ticked, but no student's names written down. Unfortunately we cannot read minds and this makes it hard for us to get things right. Your co-operation is appreciated in this matter

Department of Vocational Education Careers and Guidance.

This year has seen approximately 50 students from Year 10 - 12 take up studies either through TAFE, Private providers or University. Access to a number of education pathways has become easier for many students. While they do have to meet the entry requirements of the respective courses or vocation we have had a high rate of acceptance into the student's area of interest. Mathew Bary is our most recent student to gain a traineeship in the building industry. While working with some students to secure a vocational pathway we have some students who wish to commence University before completing Year 12.

The University of Queensland is calling for interested Year 11 students to apply for the Queensland Enhanced Studies Program (ESP) for 2010. Of course there are requirements so please access the following website for more information. www.uq.edu.au/study/index.html?page=13018. Keep and eye out for other universities offering similar programs.

Also don't forget the TSXPO on the 18th and 19th July at the RNA Exhibition Building. All universities will have information stands.

Please do not hesitate to contact the staff in the department if you require any information about University, TAFE, and Traineeships/Apprenticeships and don't forget we offer a confidential counselling service as well. We are more than willing to assist you or your child to face the future with a positive outlook.

Late and Incomplete Assignments

Some of our Middle and High School students have settled into a pattern of late or non-presentation of assignments. Failure to complete assignments, particularly in Years 11 and 12 can deem a non-result in that subject, due to QSA requirements.

Parents need to check the respective assignment schedules for their students, and assist them with time management, in order that these assignments are completed on time.

Some students will be required to catch up on incomplete work in their own time, after school - until 5.00pm daily, until the task is completed.

If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to telephone your child's teacher on 3897 2990.

Homework Diaries

So that students are kept accountable for homework and assessment tasks, we are seeking the support of parents in a practical, but simple way. On a weekly basis, parents should check their Middle and Senior School student's diaries. Please check that daily entries for each subject are written in their diaries. Even if there is no written work, there is great reward in revising work from the previous lessons. Please refer to the Parent Handbook (p13) or Student Diary (p2) for suggested time allocations for homework and study. There is provision in the Student Diary to assist students with planning a regular study/revision program at home (see pp 57-60).

DANGER... Front Drive Through

Many parents are ignoring the NO STANDING rule through the front driveway of the school. The practice of stopping to collect or drop off children is very dangerous, and also stops the flow of traffic through this area.

Some cars are still being parked in Senior Administration car parks. This is very frustrating for admin who are often in and out of the school throughout the day, and arrive back at school to discover that their car park is occupied. Please help in this matter, as it will aid us in our efficiency.

Top

Student Drop off and Collection

Parents are advised that the drive-through section at the front of the school is a definite NO STANDING ZONE. Cars should not be parked in this section, as a matter of safety and to aid traffic flow.

Some parents have parked their cars immediately inside Gate 1, near the Prep School. This creates danger to children and difficulty of bus drivers. Please collect your child from the Prep school, and walk with them to the car park to avoid a potential accident or injury.

Secondary TAFE Students

Would parents of students who attend a TAFE course please encourage their child to present the Student Log of Attendance to the TAFE teacher WEEKLY and during their next Voc Ed lesson present the log to Voc staff for verification. As part of the school reporting process at the end of Semester 1 & 2, the Voc Ed department will report on the weekly TAFE attendance of these students, however there are a number of students who still do not apply the above guideline to themselves. Parents please be aware that if this log is not sighted then the end of Semester report may state that your child, as far as we are aware, has not attended TAFE. Please contact 38972769 for more info if necessary.

SMS Texting

Mueller College has purchased software that allows us to automatically communicate via text messaging student absences with parents, guardians and carers.

The text will initially inform carers or parents about their child's absenteeism. In the near future text messaging will report students' lateness and also if they are in sick bay.

Every morning the class roll is marked by the form teacher and this information is recorded in the school's computer system. Teacher Aides will send out text messages to the carers or parents, on behalf of the college for any child that is marked absent, without a reason.

A message will not be sent out if the carer has rung the school giving a reason for the child's absence. However, on the initial trial there may be errors in the recording of a child being absent as the child may be at music or drama practice, or somewhere else during roll marking.

Parents and Carers MUST encourage their children to sign in at D25 if late or when not in roll class in the morning. Carers should not be alarmed at receiving a text of their child's absence in this early stage until all avenues are investigated. However, we would appreciate a return telephone call (07 3897 2792) to the school from the parent or carer to discuss the matter as there may be other circumstances we are unaware of. If there are any concerns regarding this reporting process, please do not hesitate to call the school.

We will greatly appreciate your kind cooperation in this matter when we get the software working. Thanks.
