FROM THE PRINCIPAL
NAPLAN
By now all Year 3, 5 and 7 students would have received their NAPLAN results from the tests that they did in
May this year. I am very pleased with the improvements that my students achieved this year. There is a
distinctive movement up in our results which now places us as one of the top achieving schools in the South
Coast Region. This is due to the hard work and dedication of my staff in diagnosing previous results and
addressing areas in their planning and teaching.
At present, my Year 2, 4 and 6 staff are working with school administrators to study this year’s data,
celebrate successes and address areas which can be further improved. Our Year 3, 5 and 7 staff will be also
delving into the data to determine their teaching directions for the rest of this year.
LITERACY COACH
I would like to welcome our new Literacy Coach Mrs Louise Sherrington who will be working at our school
fulltime for the next year. Louise will be working with our Year 2, 4 and 6 staff in the specific area of reading
this term and will then work with Year 3, 5 and 7 staff Semester 1 in 2010. We are looking forward to having
Louise’s expertise in our school.
SPRING FAIR
Thanks to all those parents and staff who have volunteered to assist at our fair on Saturday October 31. It’s
going to be a great day and a handful of people have planned some fantastic activities for our community to
enjoy. Come along and join in all the fun and support our school.
NEW PLAYGROUND
Our new Prep/Year 1 playground is well under way in planning. You can expect to see some action occurring
in November and it should be completed before school resumes in January. It will be a great asset to our
school.
CENTRELINK
The Australian Government Mobile Office will be visiting our community to provide information and
assistance with Australian Government payments and services.
While their primary focus is to raise awareness of drought assistance for farmers and agriculture-related
small businesses in rural and remote areas of Australia, they have recently expanded their services to
include a broader range of payments and services for families, students and seniors.
The Mobile Servicing Unit is essentially a fully-functional mobile office, and is outfitted with next G technology
satellite phones and internet connections, laptops and printers.
When travelling throughout Australia, they encourage farmers, irrigators, small businesses and the general
public to visit them when they are in town to see how they may be able to help them.  As part of their special
visit to the Gold Coast region, they would like to invite our students to visit the Mobile Servicing Unit to learn
about rural and remote regions of Australia.
They will be located in our area on:
Thursday, 19 November 2009 9am - 5pm

NATIONAL BANDANA DAY – FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER
The Student Council are once again taking part in National Bandana Day. Bandana Day helps us to raise
money for CanTeen, an organisation that supports young people who have been diagnosed with cancer.
CanTeen helps these young people to find the kind of support they need. It is based on a peer-support
system which helps young people living with cancer meet and interact with other young people living with
cancer. Young people who have someone to talk to with a similar experience have less psychological
distress as a result and are better able to cope with the uncertainties of their cancer diagnosis.
The Bandanas will be sold between Monday 26 October and Friday 30 October.
All Bandanas are $3.00.  They are available in a variety of colours and patterns and will be sold before
school outside the office by the student council.
Please wear your Bandana on Friday 30 October.
YEAR 7 GRADUATION
Each year we have a special Graduation Ceremony for our Year 7 students. This year, this event will be held
on Tuesday 8 December at the Dreamworld Studios Amphitheatre followed by one hour of selected
Dreamworld rides. Graduating students are free of charge with admission for all other guests being $20.
Please note that younger brothers and sisters are not invited to this evening. It is for Graduates and
adult family and friends only. This helps us to keep this night as a special night for the Year 7 students to
share with their parents and adult family and friends. Complimentary tea, coffee and cake are provided on
the night. Invitations will be sent home with students next week.

FROM THE SPORTS DESK
Please join the school in congratulating Aiden from 7A and Brayden from 7G.  Both boys have been selected
in the AFL Lions Future Stars program. This is a tremendous achievement considering the vast array of
talent that trialled for the squad. Year 7 boys from all over the Gold Coast and Northern NSW, who had no or
limited experience in AFL but had excelled in another sports, were given the opportunity to try out for the
Lions Future Stars program. This is a unique opportunity for Aiden and Brayden to participate in a first class
sport and education experience facilitated by Brisbane Lions stars and AFL Queensland. The Phys Ed.
Department at Pacific Pines will be keeping an eye on your sporting careers in the future.
Well done Aiden and Bray!
