Footy Day & The Winter Warmer Appeal
The date for the annual school Footy Day has been changed to Thursday, 20 August. On this day,
students are invited to dress out of uniform in support of their favourite footy team. In support of the
State Schools’ Relief Committee, supporting needy students in schools across Victoria, the school
encourages every student who dresses out of uniform to donate at least $2 toward ‘The Winter
Warmer Appeal’.
More details will be announced closer to the school Footy Day. In addition, information will be
provided to all students and families regarding the special lunch offers available to students on this
day.
NED is coming to our school!
The NED Show will take place on Wednesday, 5th August at 12:30 pm for the whole school. The

becoming champions at school and in life.
Please note the special notice that has been sent home to all families with more details. Students
interested in owning their very own yo-yo, have the option of purchasing NED gear from a range of

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT
Introduction of House Points:

This Term we have seen the introduction of House points at
Ruskin Park.
Students  are awarded points in each classroom. House captains
collect and tally the points each week and the House cup is
awarded to the  highest scoring team at assembly the following
Monday morning.
In week one the house cup was won by Red House and in week
two it  was won by Blue House. Although they have yet to be a
weekly winner,  Green house has scored well in both weeks.
The overall tally sees Blue, Green and Red equal first with 6
points.

The
Victoria Police Showband
visited the school on Thursday the 30th July.
They played from 2.30 until about 3.15
and everyone in attendance enjoyed an afternoon of great
music.
Thanks to Mr. Alexander for organizing this performance.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Family and Friends in conjunction with the school have decided to try and address the problem of
lost property. It has been decided that once a fortnight we will be going through the lost property
cupboards and returning all named items to their owners.
Any items that remain unclaimed and unmarked are now to be sold, at a reduced cost, back to the
school public so to avoid a buildup of unclaimed items.
Please remember to check for lost property on a regular basis and make sure all items are clearly
labelled so owners can be found.
Please keep your eyes open for the notice being sent home to advise when and where the first
sale will commence. First in best dressed, no guarantee on availability of items.

Warmest regards

Samantha Unsworth
President Family and Friends.
PREP TRANSITION 2009 - 2010
We conducted a very successful Prep Transition session last Thursday 23rd
July, with approximately 50 eager preschoolers in attendance.  The children
thoroughly enjoyed making Teddy Bear Puppets and singing songs.
The transition sessions held at Ruskin Park PS are a wonderful way for
preschool children to become familiar with the staff and the school setting.
Our next Transition session will be held  on Friday 21st August between
2.30-3.30pm.  The children will explore a range of activities  related to
Mathematics.
Afternoon tea will be provided for parents.  So please feel free to come
along.

PLANET ARK TREE DAY
Ruskin Park Primary School will be
participating in the annual Planet Ark Tree
Planting Day for schools, which is a nation
wide program.  This will be taking place on:

Friday, 31st July, 2009 at 2.30pm.

Students will be selected from each grade to
represent their class and they will plant
Australian native trees and shrubs provided by
Candlebark Nursery.  The plants donated will
be planted in a designated area of the school
yard.  Each class will be given responsibility for
monitoring and caring for their trees.

During this week our students will be involved in lessons designed to explore the importance of
plants and the need to care for our Planet.  We look forward to a fun filled week of activities.

METROPOLITAN  ROBOCUP JUNIOR WINNERS
All of the Level 4 students in the first
semester had an opportunity, as part of their
classroom activities, to program a robot to
move to music. Josh C. and Caleb B. took on
the challenge to develop a program and
robots for the Robocup Junior
Championships.
With the experience of being part of last
year’s team to go to Perth, Josh had a vision!
He, along with Caleb’s help, has spent the
last 2 months listening to ‘Jail House Rock’
while he built up a program second by
second. The result was a very clever detailed
program in which two robots move to the beat
of the music outside a prison scene.
Last Saturday the two boys took their robots to Sacre Coeur in Malvern where the Metropolitan
Competition took place. The boys were very organised and didn’t experience any problems on the
day, which enabled us to have a great day watching all the other robots perform.
Each team had two excellent performances and were marked on an interview about their robots
and their program. The interview score and the score of the best performance
were used to decide the winners of the competition. Their score was good enough to win the Junior
Dance’ competition.
They intend to develop their program and scene further in the next few weeks in preparation for the
Victorian Competition which is to be held at Scienceworks on August 14th. We wish them all the
best for the next level of competition.
