PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Planet Ark & National Tree Day
Thanks to all the classes who participated in the recent Tree planting afternoon at school. A special
thank you goes to Mrs. Beare, Mr. Scott and Natalie Tisch for all their efforts in organizing the
plants and coordinating the day.
Reminder for maintaining good health
Good personal hygiene and leaving sick children at home or visiting your GP is the best way to
stay well and prevent the spread of the flu. For more information and health updates, go to
NED Show and Yoyos
Students are reminded to: Never Give Up; Encourage Others; and Do Your Best!
Yoyos may only be used in the school courtyard area during the school day. Any issues with
purchased yoyos at the school may be referred to the school principal.
Working Bee-Sunday, 23 August
Students and their families are invited to attend the next working bee anytime between 9 and 12
noon. Years 3 to 6 students and their teachers are especially encouraged to join in and help out
around the school. A pizza lunch will follow.
New Students at Ruskin Park
Throughout the school year students from other areas and states move into the Croydon area and
select Ruskin Park Primary School as the school of choice for their children. We welcome all these
new families as they settle into the community and enjoy friendly interactions with their new
neighbours in the beautiful surroundings of the Dandenongs.
New arrivals and local families are always welcome to phone the school on 9723 3886 with any
questions or concerns they may have and ask for either Elle May Laikve or Mary Kelly.
BER – Building Education Revolution funding
Work will commence at the start of October on a full-sized gymnasium, thanks to the Rudd
Stimulus Package and focus on improving state schools’ infrastructure and building needs. A letter
to the community has been included with this issue of the newsletter and the immediate local
community will receive a letter-drop shortly to inform them of this wonderful opportunity for the
benefit of all the students at Ruskin Park Primary School.
Thank you,
Elle May Laikve,
Principal.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT
House Points:
All children are working hard in their classrooms to earn points for the House Cup which is
presented weekly at assembly. Last week’s winning house was Yellow House.
Not OK To Be Away:
Remember to advise the school when your child is absent from school.  A timely phone call, note
or email to the classroom teacher or office is appreciated.
Head Lice:
While children are at school many families will have contact with head lice. Head lice are common
in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. The good news… We know
where they live and we know how to find them.
If you follow these steps, once a week, the control of head lice in your home will be greatly
improved.
Step1
Comb inexpensive hair conditioner on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair.
This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around;
Step 2

Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue;
Step 3

Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs;
Step 4

If lice or eggs are found, the child should be treated;
Step 5
If the child has been treated recently and only hatched eggs are found, you may not
have to treat since the eggs could be old.
If your child has head lice – tell anyone who has had head to head contact with them and ask them
to check their family for head lice. Remind children of the importance of not sharing headgear or
personal articles. Tying back long hair can help prevent the spread of head lice.

Assistant Principal

SOMERS CAMP
Last week, eight of our Ruskin Park children spent eight days at Somers Camp.
They had a wonderful time and participated in an array of different activities.
A DVD of our camp is available if any parent would like to view it.
BYE BYE BIRDIE
We are very proud to have been asked once again to join the
wonderful cast at Maroondah Secondary College and take
part in their annual production.
The children involved have easily learnt the songs and
mastered the dances and are ready to perform on one of two
nights - the 18th and 22nd August.
We are delighted by their commitment to the show and know
they will proudly represent Ruskin Park Primary School.
If you would like to see the show you can arrange to buy
