![]() Dear Parents and Guardians
The Building the Education Revolution program and Senior Building project will see a flurry of
activity at Varsity College over the months ahead. The refurbishment of the Junior Hall is on
schedule with the floating wooden floor now installed and looking fabulous. Arrangements will be
made to accommodate the Year Three classes moving into this area around Week Six, once works
are finalised. This temporary arrangement will be dependent upon the completion of the LENSE
library and technology building. The LENSE project is about to undergo final briefing and design,
leading to the construction phase. The successful construction company tender for the senior
building has now been finalised with works to commence shortly. The new Chinese Language
Centre will be project managed to accommodate construction of the senior building.
In Semester One this year, Varsity College implemented the suite of Varsity Integrated Projects
(VIPs) across Years 1 to 9. Research supports that a high performing school is committed to a
culture of continuous improvement in providing the best possible outcomes for students. To this
end and six months on, Varsity College is currently engaging all Heads of School and Heads of
Department in the first stage of reviewing the VIP curriculum spanning the three subschools.
Initially, this review is designed to ensure that the VIP 1-9 suite meets the intended goals of
providing a seamless, engaging and intellectually challenging curriculum and to seek
recommendations for improvement. The new VIPs for Term
Three are now well under way.
Varsity Colleges One to One Laptop Program is being launched this week with a full colour
brochure being mailed to all current Year 9 and 10 student families for the initial rollout for Years
10 and 11 in 2010. This is an exciting initiative for our students allowing full 1:1 laptop access for
students both at home and at school. Our college was privileged this week to host members of
Education Queenslands eLearning branch to discuss our 1:1 laptop programs. The team was most
praiseworthy of the progress our college has made with regard to implementing our Varsity One to
One Laptop Program and will continue to take an active interest in our ongoing journey.
The Brisbane Exhibition Student Free Day on Wednesday 12 August will see our staff involved in a
range of professional development activities primarily in the area of ICT. Staff will be inserviced on
a variety of eLearning strategies for enhancing student learning through the development of 21st
century skills.
All middle and senior students from Years 7 to 12 participated in our annual Athletics Carnival at
Pizzey Park recently. Our students demonstrated enthusiastic house spirit, great sportsmanship
and donned a few whacky costumes to support their house colours. Congratulations to the
students who celebrated a podium place and also to all students who got in and had a go to earn
points for their house. Congratulations to Burleigh house who were victorious on the day.
It would now seem that H1N1Human Swine Flu is becoming more commonly widespread
throughout our wider community and is likely to continue to cause further concern over the flu
season. It is difficult to predict how much this will impact our college community through both staff
and students losing time due to illness. Once again, I must emphasise the need for all staff and
students to remain at home whilst flu like symptoms prevail and we will continue to manage our
practices to minimise the spread. I thank already those families who have been proactive and
cooperative to this end.
![]() Last week, I attended the scene of an accident where a middle school student riding a bicycle had
collided with a motor vehicle. The bicycle was wedged underneath the vehicle and the student was
very fortunate to only sustain soft tissue injuries after being thrown from his bicycle. It is a sobering
thought as to what might have been and the consequent impact on both family and our school
community. I must implore parents to constantly be vigilant with their children regarding road
safety and the necessity to always wear a helmet. Our lives can change in an instant and our
young people MUST wear their helmets and minimise potential fatalities and head injuries. Please
let us do everything we can to keep our family members and students safe.
I will be returning to Middle School next week and have enjoyed my time in the Executive Principal
role. It is wonderful to spend the time observing the rich diversity of teaching and learning activities
across the P-12 College. Our students are hardworking, engaging and fantastic young people and
are supported by an exceptionally committed and energised staff.

Dear Parent,
As a part of our school's new approach towards the way we communicate with you, we are excited
to inform you that we now offer interactive, graphically rich, full colour electronic newsletters to all
our parents.
The concept of eNews is similar to the printed paper newsletters which we already send out
regularly, but with added benefits - eNews is personally delivered directly to your email inbox via
the Internet. This delivery method has many advantages.
![]() It is cost effective, time efficient and personalised to your name. Most importantly the school
receives this service completely free of charge from Australian Newsletter Services who also
supply our paper newsletters with the help of advertisers.
To receive this service all you need is a computer with internet access and email. Those who
currently do not have internet access at home can still receive our traditional paper newsletter.
With our eNews service the distance between the school and the parents will be further shortened
as the parents will be able to experience firsthand what activities the school is currently
undertaking and the latest information on Academic, Health, Sport and other areas that may
interest you. This way the whole family can share the success stories of your children as these
eNewsletters can be forwarded to anyone with email.
To sign up for our eNewsletter please type the link below into the address bar of your browser.
Australian Newsletter Services has made the signup process automated and only takes a few
minutes when prompts are followed. Your email address will only be used to send out school
eNews and nothing else.
This environment friendly approach to communication means that hard copy distribution of the
Newsletter will be drastically reduced over the next 10 weeks. Classroom Newsletter distribution
will cease at the end of Term 1. Hard copy Newsletters will be available at Campus Administration
Offices from the beginning of Term 2.
If you experience any difficulties please feel free to contact AustNews IT Department on 1800 245
077 or email help@austnews.com.au.
Thank you

Principals Award Ceremony
Last Friday we held the first Principals Award for Academic Excellence in the
Prep Undercover area. Parents and family members were invited for this
special morning tea to support their child in receiving an award for excellent
academic achievement and outstanding attitude/ application to learning. The
children from each Prep school classroom were selected by their teachers for their excellent efforts
so far this year. All children who received their award had their photo taken and this will be on
display in the office foyer.
This award will become a monthly event and over the year will cover four areas of excellence in
Academic, Sporting, Performing Arts and Community Service realms. It is important to
acknowledge all children who are achieving well so that they will continue to strive to reach their
potential, which is part of the Varsity College vision. I would like to thank De Young, the Vice-
President of the P&C and P-3 representative, for her support and presence at the event.
Visits to Science Centre
This term has already seen some exciting events, with the Year 3 group visiting the Science
Centre in Brisbane. All children who attended came back buzzing with ideas around energy types,
magnetism and various other elements of scientific knowledge. This excursion provided great
impetus to the Year 3 VIP for this term, which is focusing on How My Body Works. I am certain
that many parents will have been challenged with some very tricky questions
following these excursions!
Importantly, I would like to congratulate all children on their wonderful behaviour
and representation of Varsity College at this public venue thank you for taking
pride in your school. Thanks also to the many parents who came along as helpers
![]() on the day your presence makes the excursions possible, especially those who were asked to
come at the last minute!!!
VIP News We Have Gone Chicken Crazy
If you venture around the Year 1 classrooms at present, things are little more chirpy than usual
with the arrival of the Henny Penny hatchlings. The unit of studys focus is In My Garden and has
the children investigating animals that live in the garden, as well as life cycles, habitat and varying
movements of different creatures. The hatchlings are beginning to get their first feathers at present
and a highlight of every day is getting a chance to hold the little chicks. If you get a chance, pop
into one of the classrooms and have a look at a baby chook!
Year 2 children are looking at growing of a different kind with their VIP unit From Grow to Whoa. I
am especially excited about this as it involves the exploration of how foods are
grown and produced. I have informed Year 2 classes that I will be keen to find out
what they have learned about healthy eating and making good food choices and
maybe help me with my diet as well ! A number of classrooms spread across P-3
have planter boxes growing a variety of plants at present great timing leading into
Spring. One class has promised me a very nice salad grown in our very own mini-
Varsity College garden.
Important Announcement: Enrol Now For Prep 2010
Although it is still early August, we are already planning ahead for our new intake of Prep students
in 2010. I would like to advise all parents who are intending to enrol next year to contact the Prep
School office now to start the enrolment process. We have many wonderful events planned for
next term to support our enrolling families, so do not delay in getting your enrolment forms filled out
and returned. If you have other friends and family who live in our catchment area and they are
intending to enrol next year, have them contact us as soon as possible so they can receive all the
benefits that early enrolment provides. PREP 2010 Only 6 months away !
Mathletics World Champions
Throughout 2009, 6 Switzerland has had many short appearances in the Top
50 in Australia and in the past we held the position of Top 27 in the World, in
Mathletics. Over the last week many of our students have appeared in the
Hall of Fame as well as achieving their personal best score in Mathletics. As a
class, reaching #1 IN THE WORLD was one achievement, however
maintaining that position for a week was a little tougher. As the week went on,
we set personal goals as a class, as well as individual goals. It wasnt too long before
we realised that teamwork was the key to maintaining our position.
All of our students took advantage of the classroom computers before school and at each lunch
break. We are thankful to the teachers who allowed our students to work on their class computers
for 40 mins last Thursday for our scheduled Mathletics weekly lesson, since we could not access
the Computer Lab.
On July 22, at the Junior School assembly, our class was awarded Barney the Mathletics bear.
Since this day, 6 Switzerlands interest in Mathletics skyrocketed. Our students have had so much
fun being the custodians of Barney. They take him almost everywhere and he has enjoyed
playing sport with students at lunchtime. Barneys highlight of the week was a trip to Skilled Park
where Brooke Green, Junior Titans Cheerleader introduced him to Turbo the
Titans mascot.
This week, we are setting some new goals for Mathletics. These are achievable
goals, individual goals and class goals. We challenge each and every student
to try to achieve a personal best in Mathletics. We look forward to seeing your
![]() name in the Top 100 Students in Australias Hall of Fame.
Awesome effort team 6 Switzerland! Your achievements are unbelievable! Keep up the great
work.

Cyber Bullying
Bullying comes in many forms but one of the most sinister forms is through technology (the internet
or mobile phones) in the form of MSM messaging, emails, face book etc. Psychologist Michael
Carr-Greig is a founding member of the National Centre for Bullying. He works for Beyond Blue,
and he's also been called upon to help counsel the students in the latest loss of life through cyber
bullying. He states that cyber bullying is worse than school yard bullying as it can continue 24/7.
Because the bully doesnt need to see its victim, the bullying is often more intense and more
frequent, and can be far more damaging. Cyber bullying is difficult to get away from as todays
youth is in many ways so deeply dependent on their phones and computers to develop or increase
their social network, that banning them would be what the kids would call social death.
Here are some ideas:
Talk to your child about bullying ask them if it has or is happening to them either face to
face or through the mobile or internet. If it is happening, act now.
Supervise your childs internet and mobile usage (with teenagers, this may be more difficult.
Since children need 8.25 to 9.25 hrs of good sleep each night, encourage the mobile to be
turned off and left outside the bedroom.
Limit internet usage. Where possible have the computer in a public area
Watch for changes in your childs behaviour Are they withdrawn or not themselves? Are
they sad/ tearful/angry/ not enjoying things they may have once enjoyed? Is school work
affected? These factors may indicate depression. It may also indicate that your child is
unwell.
As bullies thrive on secrecy, if you, the parent know about bullying, then report it to the
school or police and ensure follow up with you occurs.
Michael Carr-Greig states that to help children be resilient:
They need to have an adult in their life who they feel safe with (and will feel comfortable
talking to)
![]() Children need to learn social and emotional skills both at home and at school.
Provide a balanced life for your child school is one part of their life. Involve them also in
the arts, music, sport, leisure.
Teach your child to self- talk positively its just as easy to say something nice about
yourself as it is to put yourself down

World BMX Championships
Brock Smith from 7E and his sister Shania from 5B have just returned
from Adelaide where last Thursday they competed in the 2009 World
BMX Championships. Their road to this event started over two months
ago, with Brock placing 1st for the third year in a row at the South Qld
Championships and Shania placing 3rd. They then travelled to Perth for
the Australian Championships which took place in May. Brock had ninety
riders in his age group but rode extremely well making the final and
placing eighth, which was a result of another rider forcing him off the track and into the concrete
barrier. Shania was unlucky in her event where she made it to the semi-finals before being
knocked out of the competition. At the Worlds, Brock had two firsts and a second place in
qualifying but was eliminated after the first round of finals when he placed a respectable fifth.
Shanias performance was easily the best for her for the year, making the final and placing a
courageous fifth place after narrowly missing a bad crash between two riders. She now holds the
ranking of 5W for twelve months until the next championships which are to take place in South
Africa.
Congratulations Brock and Shania. We wish you both all the best in your future endeavours.
Senior / Middle Immunisation
Any Year 8 students who are behind in the recommended immunisation schedule e.g. girls who are having
HPV and have not yet had two immunisations and any students who want Hep B and have not had any
immunisations yet, are advised to speak with or email Nurse Jackie on 0432 00 5265, jatki89@eq.edu.au,

Next immunisation at school is scheduled for 9th November 2009, but GCCC requires a valid Consent and
sufficient time between vaccinations.
Students can also attend the GCCC clinics or their local doctor. Whilst students are still in Year 8, the
vaccine will be free.
Free Boostrix Immunisation - Yr 10 Students
Any Year 10 students who did not get an immunisation when the GCCC team visited, can still
receive the free Boostrix (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Whooping Cough in one vaccination) at school.
They must ensure the GCCC has a valid Consent for them and present this on the next scheduled
visit 9th November 2009. Year 10 students can also attend the GCCC Clinics if this suits. The
vaccine will be free from their local Doctor whilst they are in Year 10.

From the Head of Senior School
The Athletics Carnival last week went very well on a beautiful sunny day. Students were keen to
participate in a range of events; however, there can only be one winning house and for 2009, that
house was Burleigh House. Congratulations to all students who participated in the carnival.
This week senior students have had the opportunity to book parent teacher interviews with their
sons/daughters teachers and receive advice regarding academic performance and strategies for
future improvement.
Students have also been advised of the upcoming opportunities to visit the Gold Coast TAFE for
their Open Day on Friday 7th August and Griffith University Open Day on Sunday 9th August.
These open days are extremely valuable in assisting students in making choices for the post Year
12 pathways.
![]() With the Core Skills test approaching on September 1st and 2nd, students are being provided with
an Immersion Practice Day for the test on Wednesday 12th August. All students who plan to sit
the test are expected to be in attendance on the practice day. The experience that students gain
on this immersion day has been rated by past students as one of the most valuable elements of
their preparation.

SEP News
The main focus in the SEP at the moment is the upcoming trip to Sydney in September. Our flights
and accommodation are all booked and we are still busy trying to raise as much money as we can.
On Sunday the 23rd August, you will find SEP staff and as many students as possible, sizzling
sausages outside Bunnings at Burleigh. If you can spare a few minutes on that day to come and
have a delicious sausage for lunch, or help cook and/or sell, we would love to see you.
I have included some information about a Playgroup at Nerang that might be worth passing on to
