FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you back to Term 4. It is amazing how fast this year
has sped past and now we are into the final stages of what has been a very successful year for
Varsity College. There are many events in the upcoming weeks that I look forward to seeing you
at. The annual Awards Night, Parent Information sessions and other end of year activities are just
some of the events where I hope that we can meet. I would like to congratulate James Grace and
the Hip-Hop team for their outstanding performance at the ‘Bring It On’ finals last weekend where
they amazingly achieved 3rd place in the state for their routine. This was a deserving success and
my congratulations go to everyone involved in this program, especially to James Grace. He
undertook the development of this program and worked tirelessly to ensure that our children
performed at such a high level. My congratulations also go to the Varsity College Dragon Boat
team who won the Corporate Major Final on the weekend. The team consisted of mainly Prep
School staff. Through the impeccable organisation and direction of Deb Young, this team
blossomed throughout the event to eventually overcome all other teams in the final.
We are currently putting the final polish on the programs that will be introduced or modified for next
year, in particular the introduction of the 1-to-1 laptop program. This program will have a profound
impact on the operation of the entire College. This change will significantly alter how students learn
and this is something that needs further explanation. As adults, we look at things and analyse the
available information into patterns that we have been taught through our own experiences. In the
past this has been possible given the relatively slow pace of change. Modern research is showing
that the youth of today is in fact neurologically different from us as their exposure to modern
technology has enhanced their brains through the constant stimuli that have been available since
they were first born. The result of this is that their neurological connections in the brain are more
wired to electronic information than we are. This is not a problem until they encounter learning
methods in classrooms that we consider are ideal. Students continue to struggle due to the lack of
stimuli and technology void learning environments.
This systemic problem has a number of underlying issues for teachers, as the associated cost of
technology rich programs have in the past made this transition somewhat prohibitive. Hence this
school has taken a significant step in addressing this educational weakness and transformation
through the implementation of the Varsity College 1-to-1 program. A common misnomer is that this
program is about the laptop, yet this is absolutely not the case. We have worked tirelessly to
develop what we think is the ultimate learning tool. The software included on this computer is worth
more than double the actual cost of the machine and students are able to log in through our
protected network and gain access to a multitude of learning opportunities on the internet. The key
change is through the delivery techniques of teachers. This year alone thousands of dollars have
been invested in the development of digital pedagogy to ensure that teachers have the skills to
develop and use a digital platform for their learning programs. This will ensure that as our students
start using the 1-to-1 device, they will not just be word processing, PowerPoint and Excel. I am
sure that you will be amazed at the use of the 1-to-1 computer in each classroom.
Over the next few weeks, we will be asking all parents of Years 10 & 11 students for next year to
come to information sessions to hear what our final plans are for the implementation of this
program. It is imperative that you attend one of these sessions to understand what we will be
implementing at Varsity College. The message that you will hear will revolve around the journey to
this point and will explain that the development of this tool has been carefully undertaken with great
consultation with parents, teachers and students. We are of the opinion that this program is
possibly the best example of a 1-to-1 program in Australia and from a cost point, clearly provides
the absolute best value for money that any parent could ever expect. I think that after these
sessions, you will see how the development of this device has been integrated through the real
learning needs of your child and the development of the curriculum to best enable your child to
succeed and reach their full potential.
In concluding, I would like to reiterate the message that the Varsity College 1-to-1 program has
little to do with the computer but more to do with the learning environment. This is probably the
biggest change that we will see in education and as a school leading the way, I would like to
acknowledge the hard work of my IT team, who under the competent leadership of Anton
Tomassen, has developed what I call the ultimate learning tool.
I look forward to seeing you at one of these information sessions.

eNEWSLETTERS
Dear Parent,
As a part of our school's new approach towards the way we communicate with you, we are excited
to inform you that we now offer interactive, graphically rich, full colour electronic newsletters to all
our parents.
The concept of eNews is similar to the printed paper newsletters which we already send out
regularly, but with added benefits - eNews is personally delivered directly to your email inbox via
the Internet. This delivery method has many advantages.
It is cost effective, time efficient and personalised to your name. Most importantly the school
receives this service completely free of charge from Australian Newsletter Services who also
supply our paper newsletters with the help of advertisers.
To receive this service all you need is a computer with internet access and email. Those who
currently do not have internet access at home can still receive our traditional paper newsletter.
With our eNews service the distance between the school and the parents will be further shortened
as the parents will be able to experience firsthand what activities the school is currently
undertaking and the latest information on Academic, Health, Sport and other areas that may
interest you. This way the whole family can share the success stories of your children as these
eNewsletters can be forwarded to anyone with email.
To sign up for our eNewsletter please type the link below into the address bar of your browser.
Australian Newsletter Services has made the signup process automated and only takes a few
minutes when prompts are followed. Your email address will only be used to send out school
eNews and nothing else.
This environment friendly approach to communication means that hard copy distribution of the
Newsletter will be drastically reduced over the next 10 weeks. Classroom Newsletter distribution
will cease at the end of Term 1. Hard copy Newsletters will be available at Campus Administration
Offices from the beginning of Term 2.
If you experience any difficulties please feel free to contact AustNews IT Department on 1800 245
077 or email help@austnews.com.au
Thank you

Parent Requests For 2010
It has come to that time of the year again where we begin looking at the class lists composition for
next year. Over the next 2 weeks there is an opportunity for all parents to provide the school with
written requests for class placement for 2010, based on sound educational reasons. Some of these
reasons could include: social concerns/ needs, academic needs, specific behavioural needs or
specific history at the school that you believe should be brought to the administration’s attention.
With this information, along with the classroom teacher’s understanding and knowledge of your
child, we will begin to draft the class lists from week 5 onwards. Please note – teacher requests are
not an option, as we aim for a fair and equitable process for all families. The final date for requests
to be into the administration will be Friday, 30 October. Please attention all requests to: Mr James
Forrest, Head of Preparatory School, Varsity College.
If email is your preferred method of communication, send your requests to: jforr12@eq.ede.au
Prep Information Night “Making Connections”
This week, we held our Prep Information Night in the Senior Performing Arts auditorium, with
nearly 200 new or current parents attending. The evening highlighted our programs across the
Prep year as well as introducing new parents to the Varsity culture and philosophy. I would like to
thank the P&C for their support, along with the various VIP’s from child care centres and
Queensland Health for attending. Their presence showed the partnership that Varsity has with our
community and beyond in supporting child development before and at commencement of formal
education.
A big thankyou to the teachers and students from the senior school who put on a concert and
activities to entertain 140 children on the night – they had loads of fun and really displayed our
college as being one family – thanks especially to Stephanie McPaul for her major contribution to
organising the night.
This evening is the launching pad for our Interview and Screening processes happening in Week
4/5 this term. More information on this will be provided over the course of the term.
Birth Certificates for Prep Year
Parents of children born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2005 who are starting Prep in 2010 will
need a birth certificate to enrol them in the Prep Year. The Registry of Births, Deaths and
Marriages is encouraging parents to apply for birth certificates now to avoid the new school year
rush. To apply for a standard or commemorative birth certificate you can:
download an application form from http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm
visit the registry at 110 George Street, Brisbane or your nearest courthouse.
Don’t leave it to the last minute – apply for a birth certificate now. Further information for parents
and carers wanting to enrol their Prep-aged children in a state school in Queensland is available
on the Department of Education and Training website at:
Snapshots
1.
I will be attending an ICT Conference on the Sunshine Coast this week with 3 teachers,
Camilla Balym, Caitlin Palmer and Kellie Norris on 15/ 16 October. The conference will be
an opportunity for us to develop our ICT curriculum for next year with up to date hardware
and software, as well as linking these to our current VIP programs.
2.
Staffing Changes - There has been some slight changes to our staffing for the start of this
term. Caitlin Palmer was away for 1 week doing acting higher duties at Numinbah Valley
State School, Justine Meech was offered a position at Robina State School which she has
accepted and her position has been filled for the first 2 weeks of this term by Deb Adams
before Peter Dallas returns from long service leave in Week 3.
3.
Principal Awards This Term in Week 4 we will be presenting our Principal Awards for
this term – our focus being on excellence in the Performing Arts. Specialist teachers and
classroom teachers will be selecting children over the coming weeks to be nominated for
these awards. Two awards per class will be presented over the duration of this term.
I have been over the moon with the start to the current term – kids appear engaged and excited
about what they are doing this term. The teachers will be sending home information regarding their
VIP units and general information over this week and the next.

JUNIOR NEWS
From the Head of Junior School
Welcome back to what promises to be an extremely busy final term of the year. The staff and
students are extremely enthusiastic about the quality learning opportunities available and we look
forward to sharing accomplishments with you throughout the term. I would like to take this
opportunity to again thank you for your continued support of the Junior School and invite you to
share with us any questions and or feedback you may have.
Last week our Year 6 students took part in an action packed camping program. The camp enabled
students to further develop their relationships with other students and self confidence and is a
great lead up to entering the Middle School next year. I would like to thank all students for the
positive manner in which they participated in the camping program and all of the staff who assisted
with the organisation and supervision of students.
Congratulations to all students, staff, parents and community members who contributed towards
making the College Musical such a success. It was amazing to see the skill, commitment and
excitement shown by the children involved. As a Principal of a school, I have never been so proud.
The problem is that the bar has been set extremely high for future events.
The selection process for the 2010 Year 6 Chinese Immersion has commenced with selected
students receiving an expression of interest letter last week. For those parents whose children
received an invitation to the information evening, I encourage you to seriously consider this
wonderful opportunity. The selection process was based on school based and systemic academic
results, behaviour and commitment to learning. Final selection of successful applicants will be
concluded by Week 5 of this term.
The Year 6 Graduation for 2009 will be held on the evening of Thursday, December 3 at the Gold
Coast Convention Centre. This will be an opportunity for the school community to celebrate the
wonderful achievements of our Year 6 students. Detailed information will be sent home in the
coming weeks.
Swimming has successfully kicked off thanks to the fabulous organisation from our PE staff.
Please note that children must have correct school uniform to wear before and after swimming.
This includes correct footwear.
I would like to request that any families who are leaving Varsity to attend a different school in 2010,
to inform the office staff so that adjustments to school numbers can be made. Also, if you are
aware of any friends or neighbours who are intending to enrol their children at Varsity for next year,
please advise them to do so at their earliest convenience.
There are an increasing number of students who have been arriving to school too early in the
morning. The Junior School commences instruction at 8:35am. Students should be arriving at
school as close as possible to this time, no earlier than 8:00am.
As we enter the final term of the year, I would like to reinforce the expectation that all students
attend our school in the correct school uniform every day. This includes wearing:
the dress / sports uniform on the correct day
black, polishable, lace-up shoes with the dress uniform
the Varsity College hat

GUIDANCE NEWS
Parenting Tips
In each newsletter this term I will provide 4 parenting tips. Maybe you could discuss the tips with
friends etc. Remember there is no such thing as the perfect parent or the perfect child but there is
a lot we can learn from each other about parenting. I would welcome any feedback from these tips
and I am open to any suggestions that you may have for me to include in the next newsletter.
1.
How you say something to your child is as important as What you say.
2.
Words like “stupid”, “irresponsible”, “idiot” etc. are very hurtful. In addition to the hurt that
they feel when addressed in this manner, children may remember these words at a later
date and use them as weapons against themselves and others.
3.
Let a child answer for him/herself. By talking for our children we are not respecting their
need for autonomy.
4.
Resist the urge to compare siblings – for instance, instead of comparing one sibling
unfavourably to the other (e.g. “Why can’t you put away your school bag like your sister?”),
speak to your child only about the behaviour that displeases you.

Middle – Senior Annual Awards Night
Our Annual Awards Night will be held at the Gold Coast Arts Centre next Tuesday
night the 22nd of October. All award recipients and performers will have received a
letter inviting them to the rehearsal and the evening presentation. All students
involved in the night are required to attend the rehearsal at the Arts Centre on the
day. The school will provide buses for students who require transport to the rehearsal but parents
may choose to drive students there personally. Students are to return the permission slips by this
Thursday to their Form Teachers to allow them to attend the rehearsal. I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate all the Award recipients. They are well-deserving of their success and
have strived to achieve excellence in either the academic, cultural or community fields. Our Sports
Awards will be held as a separate function the following week.
The night is also an opportunity to showcase the wealth of talent we have here at Varsity College.
There will be a range of performances including the Middle and Senior Vocal Ensembles, the
Orchestra and Hip Hop Avenue dance group.
We pride ourselves on providing quality curricular and extra-curricular programs
that allow students to achieve excellence. The annual Awards Night is the
forum to acknowledge these achievements.
We look forward to your support at this event.

School Hip Hop Avenue Success
I am proud to announce that Varsity College (aka "Hip Hop Avenue") came 3rd at the Brisbane
Bring It On Grand Final 2009.
I would personally like to thank those who came to Brisbane and supported us on Saturday night. I
would also like to extend a special thank you to Geoff Watson, Nicole Brazeau, Fleur and Kirsty
from accounts, Tiani Bristow, Dave Reid, Steve Harriott and our Executive Principal Jeff Davis for
supporting Hip Hop Avenue on our amazing journey.
We suffered one injury to Chanelle Caddick-Watts (one of our senior team leaders). She sprained
her ankle 5 days ago. However, during the technical run she hurt it again. Despite the obvious pain
she was in, she still performed later that night. Her strength and determination is a tribute to not
only herself but to the team’s unity and spirit. Parents wanting to submit special considerations for
their child’s 2010 class placement must do so in writing by October 26. Special considerations
must be submitted to the appropriate Office and must address friendship / social issues only.
Requests for specific teachers will not be considered.
The students had a choice time and are excited to perform their winning routine again this
Wednesday (wk 2) at the "Prep Information Night" at 6.40pm and on Tuesday (wk 3) for the
Awards Night. If you haven't seen them perform, you will get an opportunity. Thanks again for all
your support.

Tennis Program Update
Just an update everybody on what’s happening with Tennis at Varsity College.
Junior School
The much successful Avive Hot Shots Tennis Program is running strong at the Junior School.
Numbers have blossomed and now approximately 25 pupils are being coached in the program at
the Junior School courts in the mornings and afternoons. All students are progressing well and are
moving up the tennis pathway. Students learn the basic shots and techniques required to play a
‘real’ game of tennis.
We currently have a limited number of places available in the program so please make contact to
enrol. Lessons are conducted on Wednesday and Friday mornings 7:30 – 8:15 and Wednesday
afternoons 2:55 – 3:40. Lessons are $12 per session which is payable at the start of the term. If
you are interested in playing tennis, please contact Impact Tennis Academy Director, Nathan
Peach on 0411 481 670 or email impacttennis@qldnet.com.au
Middle School
Due to the construction of two new courts at the Middle/Senior School, lessons are conducted on
Friday mornings from 7:15 – 8:15 by Impact Tennis Academy Co-Director. Middle School students
in Years 7, 8 & 9 interested in starting the program can contact Mike on 5572 3422. Lessons are
$12 per week with all lessons being paid for at the start of the term.
Senior School
Varsity College continues to have a number of outstanding tennis players who
train with the Impact Tennis Academy. Special mention must go to Jefferson
Jarvis and Ben Napier who finished Number 1 and 2 respectively for their age
group on the Gold Coast. Congratulations to both of these boys and good luck
to them when they represent the Gold Coast in 3 weeks time at the
Queensland Regional Championships.

Address Details
Could all Parents and Guardians please ensure that Varsity College has their
correct address details and current home phone and mobile phone numbers?
Reporting will soon be completed and student reports for Years 7 to 12 will be
posted out. Correct details will save any inconvenience of lost or misdirected
mail.
Leaving Students
If you have a student not continuing with their studies at Varsity College in 2010, could you please
advise the relevant Administration Office as soon as possible? This is to ensure the smooth
transition of your student to their new school.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS
From the Deputy Head of Senior School
It is great to be back at Varsity College after spending most of this year working with EQ Facilities
and eLearning branch. My main task was to develop a decision making model for school
leadership teams about learning space design. I then travelled the State, from Charleville to
Cairns, delivering workshops about the decision making model and how the elements of
architecture, furniture and technology combine to make more effective learning spaces for our
students. Personally, it was also a great learning experience.
I would especially like to thank Jo MacDonald for her excellent leadership of the Senior School this
year in my absence. I spent the first couple of days catching up on all the improvements and
changes to processes that Jo has led and implemented this year. It is great to have someone of
Jo’s experience and calibre in our school. Nicole Brazeau has also continued to do a fantastic job
as Deputy Principal and I look forward to working with Nicole as we strive to support students,
parents and teachers in making this the best school we can.
The survey ‘Next Step 2009’ was recently released. It reports on the destinations of Year 12
completers from 2008. It presented some really promising data on where our Year 12 students are
heading and reaffirms our Senior School motto that we are ‘creating pathways for the future’ for our
students.
Some key findings include:
62.4% of students who completed Year 12 in 2008 continued in some recognised form of
education or training in the year after they left school
38.9 % went to University and 23.6 % were involved in VET education or training
5.7% commenced an apprenticeship or traineeship
32.5% entered the workforce
Only 1.3% of students were neither studying nor in labour force.
The survey reaffirms that students are going places once they finish Varsity College. The survey
also highlights that young people are motivated and determined to carve out successful careers as
over 95% of our students were involved in earning or learning at May this year when the survey
was conducted.
Most importantly, the survey highlights the terrific job our teachers are doing to prepare their
students for the world after school.

Email advice for students leaving school at the end of Term 4
At the end of Term 4, all school-provided email accounts will close for Year 12 students and other
students who are leaving the state school system.
Please ensure your child is aware that their school provided email account will not work beyond the
end of the school year. They should ensure that they provide a personal email address to
prospective employers or educational institutions.
This is especially important for students enrolling in further education or training using the QTAC,
TAFE or other online system.
Emails will bounce if sent to a student’s school provided account after the end of term and students
may miss out on confirming their enrolment into their chosen course of study.
VET News
Welcome back to the first edition for Term 4. I hope everyone had a lovely, restful break. This will
be my last newsletter item as Mrs Dallas is returning this week. I have thoroughly enjoyed my role
as Acting Industry Liaison Officer and would like to thank the students, teachers and Admin staff
for their support.
The last couple of weeks have been very busy as well as very successful.
The last day of Term 3, I had the pleasure of attending the signup of Tamika Rowbottom. Tamika
has commenced her Cert II in Retail with Bakers Delight. Tamika’s enthusiasm, commitment &
bubbly personality went a long way in helping her secure this traineeship. Well done Tamika!
Jo Heidke (Employer), Angie Muller (MEGT), Tamika, and her Dad.
During our first week back at school, 3 students were also signed up. Firstly Oliver Davis in Year
10 was successful in securing a Cert III in Automotive Technology. His employer, Chris McGuire
from Zupps, was most impressed with the way Oliver conducted himself during his work
experience and Oliver clearly demonstrated his aptitude and interest in this field. Congratulations
Oliver!
Oliver Davis, Chris McGuire (employer) and Oliver’s Mum.
Lastly, two students, Thomas Pagram and Matthew Osborne were both signed up to commence
their traineeship here at the school. The boys have now started their Cert III in Information
Technology. Both Oliver & Thomas have demonstrated over the past months a maturity and
commitment beyond their years and are to be congratulated for their efforts. The school, Mr Anton
Tomassen and the boys are looking forward to a successful working partnership as they complete
their traineeship.
Congratulations once again to all students and our very best wishes to you in your future studies.
Good luck!

‘Be safe and watch your mates’
The Queensland Government has developed the ‘Be safe and watch your mates’ Schoolies 2009
information booklet for Queensland Year 12 students.
The free booklet contains important information that graduating students should be aware of before
attending any Schoolies occasion, to help keep themselves and their friends safe.
Focusing on health and safety, alcohol and drug awareness, personal responsibility, and young
people’s rights as consumers, the booklet is a useful tool for parents to engage in conversation
with Year 12 students and encourage healthy behaviour.
Copies of the booklet can be ordered by calling 13 13 04 or from the Queensland Government’s
Schoolies website: http://www.schoolies.qld.gov.au
To help parents talk to their teenagers about alcohol and staying safe, the Queensland
Government has produced ‘The Parents’ Guide to Alcohol and a Safer Schoolies’.
More useful information is available for parents and students on the Schoolies website, including
this year’s top safety tips, key contact numbers, and important topics for parents to discuss with
their teenager before they finish school.
Spending time reading this information now and talking with your teenager about how to stay safe
can help to ensure that Schoolies is a time to remember for all the right reasons.

Chocolate Drive
The P & C would like to congratulate the school community in raising over $25,000 in profit by
holding its first Chocolate Drive. This has been the highest amount of funds raised by the school
community and we will be thrilled to be able to distribute this to our school.
Our winners for the Highest Sellers were:
Jai Williams of Prep Red and Gabrielle Fiola of 3B both won a bike for selling 11 boxes!
Kira-Shay Donnell of 6T sold 6.5 boxes and won 4 movie passes and a sport kit!
Brooke Taylor 7H and Ashleigh Garton 8E both sold 6 boxes and won an Ipod Shuffle!
Jade Spencer of 12D sold 6 boxes and won a digital camera!
We are still waiting on outstanding chocolate money and as soon as we receive these funds we
can announce the amount that each sub school will receive.
If you do have chocolate drive money to come in, please return it ASAP to Sue Jones in the P & C
Office in the Library, Monday to Thursday for the Primary campus and at the Uniform Shop, on the
Senior Campus on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of each week.
An event such as this has to start by someone raising their hand and saying I’ll co-ordinate it. It is
no mean feat and we have had a huge contingent of volunteers who came in daily, receiving
supplies, sorting chocolates, counting money, recording, coordinating prizes and following up
outstanding funds. We send a big thank you to Helen and all the volunteers and look forward to our
Morning Tea where we can personally thank them.
Our fundraiser, whilst successful still has us with a number of boxes of Freddo’s to sell. The more
we sell the more profit we make so if you would like to help us by taking a box to your business or
work place, please contact Sue Jones on 55769394.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who took the time to write their
thoughts regarding the Chocolate Drive and how we could improve it. Events such as this have a
learning curve and we have certainly taken on board all feed back we have received.
Aladdin
A big thank you goes to all volunteers who helped in the Canteen and the selling of the raffle
tickets at our Junior School Aladdin Performances. A special mention needs to go to Varsity’s
Secret Beauty Salon, Taboon Restaurant at Easy-T Shopping Centre, Inside Surf Broadbeach, the
Cassar and McKenna Families for kindly donating some of our raffle prizes.
Performance Photos and DVDs can still be ordered and a special viewing has been arranged for
Wednesday and Thursday the 14th and 15th of October between 8-9am and 2.30 and 3.30pm in
the Junior Library.
Varsity College Inaugural Race Day
Let’s celebrate a great year together and head to the Paradise Room to have a day at the races!!
We seldom get the opportunity to socialize but here is one that you won’t want to miss. The
