Last week we had an enthusiastic parent turnout for the first P&C meeting and it was especially encouraging to see so many new parents attend this meeting. These meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month This is an ideal forum for your ideas to be discussed and supported. At the next meeting, parents will have the opportunity to elect the next president and executive members and I would encourage as many of you as possible to attend this meeting and support the election process.
Jeff Davis Executive Principal Dear Parent
As a part of our school's new approach towards the way we communicate with you, we are
excited to inform you that we now offer interactive, graphically rich, full colour electronic
newsletters to all our parents.
The concept of eNews is similar to the printed paper newsletters which we already send out regularly, but with added benefits - eNews is personally delivered directly to your email inbox via the Internet. This delivery method has many advantages.
It is cost effective, time efficient and personalised to your name. Most importantly the school receives this service completely free of charge from Australian Newsletter Services who also supply our paper newsletters with the help of advertisers.
To receive this service all you need is a computer with internet access and email. Those who currently do not have internet access at home can still receive our traditional paper newsletter.
With our eNews service the distance between the school and the parents will be further shortened as the parents will be able to experience firsthand what activities the school is currently undertaking and the latest information on Academic, Health, Sport and other areas that may interest you. This way the whole family can share the success stories of your children as these eNewsletters can be forwarded to anyone with email.
To sign up for our eNewsletter please type the link below into the address bar of your browser. Australian Newsletter Services has made the signup process automated and only takes a few minutes when prompts are followed. Your email address will only be used to send out school eNews and nothing else.
This environment friendly approach to communication means that hard copy distribution of the Newsletter will be drastically reduced over the next 10 weeks. Classroom Newsletter distribution will cease at the end of Term 1. Hard copy Newsletters will be available at Campus Administration Offices from the beginning of Term 2.

Preparatory School NewsVisits to the Preparatory School Over the last week, the Year 2 and 3 students were visited by a local Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Joyce Summers, as part of their current VIPs. Aunty Joyce shared some interesting stories about the Dreamtime and how European settlers impacted on their way of life and the environment. The children showed great interest and had many questions ready to ask her. The visit provided them with some relevant insights into both cultural as well as environmental aspects of our local area.
Another exciting, upcoming visit for the Year 2's is Singaporean children's author, Shamini Flint. She has written a range of children's books which the Year 2's are sharing in class and in their library time. Shamini, in Australia next month for the Somerset Conference for Teachers and Librarians, will be visiting Varsity College on Friday 13 March. As well as Shamini's workshops with the Year 2 classes, we are planning to hold a parent and children reading session after school. Details for both the class visits and reading session will be forwarded home closer to her visit.

Junior School NewsFrom the Head of Junior School What a fantastic start to the school year! After only four weeks, it is amazing to see classrooms running so smoothly, with teachers and students enthusiastically engaged in the teaching and learning process. It is also great to see students wearing their College uniform correctly and arriving to school fully prepared for the day's learning. The fact we are already week five reinforces the need to make every day, every moment count. Thank you parents for your continued support and I ask that you continue to send your children to school in this manner for the remainder of the school year.
Our first major sporting event of the year has been held with our Year 5 and 6 students participating in a Junior / Middle School swimming carnival. The event was a huge success, with a mix of fun, participation and outstanding achievements. All students are to be congratulated for their excellent behaviour, especially considering how hot the day was. Fourteen Junior School students were selected to represent our College at the District Swimming Carnival.
This year it is the Junior School's turn to host a musical spectacular. A highly skilled and enthusiastic team made up of Astin Blaik (Choir), Tracey Reineker (Drama) and Celia Tapurau (Dance) are preparing scripts and will commence casting in the coming weeks. Students nominating for the musical must be able to commit themselves to the advertised practice and performance dates.
Students in Year 5 this year will once again have the opportunity to enter into the Varsity College Chinese Immersion Program. This program is a possible pathway for high achieving students. Children will be selected for this program based on the following criteria: • high academic skills, • excellent organisational abilities and • exemplary behaviour,
throughout the 2009 school year. The selection process will commence in Term 3.
The first Junior School Parent Contact group meeting will be held next week. Each Junior School class has representatives who will attend the meeting to share views and provide feedback on Junior School issues. Parents who would like a question / issue to be discussed at the meeting can pass on queries to their parent contact or to their child's classroom teacher.

Years P - 6 NewsJunior Resource Centre- Library News The library has been extremely busy stocking teachers with their resources for 2009 and commenced borrowing in Week 4.
Thank you to the great number of students and parents who were vigilant in returning borrowed resources to the library at the completion of the 2008 school year and the beginning of the 2009 school year.
Unfortunately the library still has an outstanding number of unreturned home readers, fiction and nonfiction books which students will need to return before further borrowing will be permitted upon the books or inform the library staff of any loss or damage so that replacement arrangements can be made.

Supervised School Crossings : Bridgewater Drive & Varsity Parade
The commencement of the school crossings in Bridgewater Drive and Varsity Parade gives priority to the safety of all community members and Varsity College students needing to walk to and from school.
When children use the crossings please encourage them to observe the following:
- Wait behind the yellow line until the crossing supervisor blows her whistle.
- Walk across the crossing; please don't run.
- If they are on a bike, scooter or skateboard, dismount before crossing.
- Hold onto footballs, tennis balls and anything else that might cause a distraction while crossing.
To ensure safety for all community members, it is vital that:
- drivers do not park where yellow lines are painted on the road.
- drivers do not complete u-turns at the entrance of staff carparks.
- all adults and children wait for the crossing supervisor to blow her whistle twice prior to entering the crossing area.
This service is provided for the safety of all members of our school community. To Shave or Not to Shave...? Well, I've answered YES!! In 2007 Varsity College and the Varsity Community supported the Leukaemia foundation by sponsoring three Varsity staff members and one senior student to shave their heads in the World's Greatest Shave. In this community fundraiser, I am very proud to say that we raised close to $9000. I have taken up the challenge to go bald for the cause once again. John Philistin and Hadyn Sutherland will also be shaving their beautiful locks off again. I have been approached by a few very brave Senior and Middle students who will also be shaving their hair: - Dustin Parker (yr12)
- Yoshi Kanno (yr12)
- Kyle Muzyczka (yr12)
- Jasmine Veldhulzen (yr8)
- and a few more who are finalising permission forms
So often we are faced with the reality that life is not always smooth and this is a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference. Money raised will:
- directly support patients and their families when they need it most.
- provide them with a free ‘home-away-fromhome' near hospital during their treatment.
- allow the Leukaemia Foundation to transport them to appointments and provide practical assistance and emotional support.
- go towards Leukaemia research into better treatments and cures.
We would appreciate your support through sponsorship. To make a donation for the ‘Varsity Team' you can go to the World's Greatest Shave website and donate online on the ‘Sponsor a Team' link and type in Varsity. Don't keep this a secret. Feel free to share the news with everyone and anyone. Every dollar counts. http://www.worldsgreatestshave.com/

General 7 - 12 News Off The Shelf - Library News Loan Statistics Up until Friday 20 February - In only 11 days of loans we have loaned out 5115 items! It sure has been busy at the circulation desk.
Resource Shopping The resource collection at Varsity Senior Library reflects the reading and learning needs of its students and teachers. Each semester the borrowers are asked to fill in a form letting me know the topics and titles needed by them. These forms will go out to every staff member and form class this week. Once this list is collated it is sent to suppliers to find those resources. When these new resources start coming in, interest is always keen from our library regulars.
Overdues Parents please help develop a sense of responsibility in your children with library loans. There is a lot of expensive items in our collection which students can borrow for a 3 week loan and renew as many times as they want if the item is not requested by others. If we never had to chase overdue loans our time could be spent processing new resources. Here's a tip: students write the date due in their diary. Magazines Kids love to read the magazines as a break from their studies - so if you have any fairly current magazines at home that are no longer needed, please deliver them to the library for student leisure reading.
Chess Competitions Chess has begun again in the Senior and Middle School. Senior Competition - Years 8-12 is Wednesday 4 March Somerset College.
Cost: $12 payable at student services by Thursday 26 Feb
$15 if paid after 26 Feb and by Mon 2 March.
Interested students need to see Ms Fischer in the library to collect details to register. Chess is a great brain sport so encourage your child to join up.
Somerset Celebration Of Literature :
It's on again this year, 16 -20 March at Somerset College. Go to www.somerset.qld.edu.au/cofl for all the program details. Concerts / magic/ authors/ food/ sports heroes / quizzes and a whole lot of literary fun! Take your children and enjoy the hooked- on- books feeling and a great day out.

Middle School NewsFrom the Head of Middle School
Congratulations to our students for upholding the high uniform expectations in our Middle School. We also thank our parents for supporting us in achieving such a fantastic start to the school year, enabling our teachers and students to focus on teaching and learning.
Due to our large numbers in Year 9 we have created several extra classes for electives, which has meant changes to some students' timetables. These timetables and changes were completed last week and as of Tuesday, all Year 9 students were organised and fortunate to be in smaller elective classes.
Our Parent Partnership evening on Tuesday 3 February was extremely well attended by parents and caregivers. Giving your time to hear important curriculum messages and the classroom expectations relevant to your child's education is much appreciated. We would also like to acknowledge the dedication of our teaching staff to enable such important partnerships between school and home.
Last week we welcomed back Mrs Jill Vaughan, our Year 7 Head of Department who unfortunately due to illness, was unable to begin the 2009 school year with us. We are thankful of Ms Vaughan's speedy recovery and know how keen she was to meet our new group of Year 7 students, especially her class of 7G. Last Monday 9 February was our first Year 5-9 swimming carnival. It was an enormous event, held at Somerset College, under extremely hot conditions. Like any event at Varsity, student numbers were huge! Overall, our students displayed fantastic behaviour, sportsmanship and even patience as they waited in lines for racing, buses and ‘snow cones'. The ‘snow cone' stand vendor commented on the manners and exemplary behaviour demonstrated by our students. Thank you to Ms Katherine Tewes our Middle/Senior Sports Co-ordinator for her tireless dedication in ensuring the organisation of this major event. Thanks also to the many staff across both Junior and Middle School who gave such outstanding support throughout the day. Lateness and Absenteeism: Education of our students is of prime importance to us and to this end we also ask for your support in ensuring students are at school on time (8.50am) and are in attendance unless there is an authorised reason. Varsity College prides itself on excellent results and opportunities for all students. There is a direct correlation between attendance at school and academic results. Attendance at school is compulsory by law. In line with Education Queensland guidelines, if students are late to school they must report to the office with a note or a parent present. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds without written consent. The school requires a note of explanation on the day a student returns from being absent.
Finally, our thoughts and wishes of hope are sent to areas in North Queensland, once again devastated by floods and towns completely destroyed by fires in Victoria. Along with our best wishes we are sending the proceeds of our gold coin donations made by the P-12 Varsity school community. Thank you to everyone for your generous donations. Senior School NewsFrom the Head of Senior School
We are now into Week 5 of the term and students should be settled and working hard in their classes. Subject changes have finished for this semester as we are entering a time when many subjects are undertaking their first assessment tasks. All students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will have received an assessment calendar for Term 1. If any student has lost theirs, another copy is available at the Student Service counter in the Senior School office.
One of our goals for this year is to ensure that all students are able to achieve a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). This is a new certificate that was issued for the first time in 2008 and requires students to achieve passes in their subjects and in the case of the vocational pathway, to complete their certificate courses. Our aim is to provide successful outcomes for all of our students.

Acting Senior Head of School
Senior School Update It is wonderful to see students settled in classes across the senior school. There has been a number of opportunities for students in recent weeks to be involved in learning beyond the classroom. The QCS Team building day was held in Week 2, involving our Year 12 students. Thirty four intrepid Year 12 Art students ventured deep into the heart of Springbrook with Maria Breeden and Ricky Moss. The students were immersed in a three day program involving local artists and providing them with beautiful scenery as a stimulus for their artworks. This week we have the Multi-Strand Science students attending an excursion to Fleay's Wildlife Centre and Mr Brkich is attending the Conventional Convention in Brisbane with Simone Wilson and Chanelle Rodger representing Varsity College. Our Senior School Swimming Carnival which was postponed due to poor weather will now be held on Friday 27th of February. A huge thank you to our staff who consistently go above and beyond to ensure our students have so many opportunities.

Mind Their Brain Year 10 and 11 Students Our Year 10 and 11 students have started the year with the exciting Mind Your Brain course of study in their Senior Futures lessons. This program has been developed by internationally-renowned "brain man" John Joseph who visited Varsity College at the end of 2008 to train Senior School staff in the development and function of adolescent brains.
The goal of this program is that students will learn about brain anatomy, brain care and how they can learn and remember more effectively.
Our students have started with learning about brain anatomy using both a theoretical and hands-on approach. Our Year 10s have had the challenge of dissecting a sheep's brain to learn about the different parts of the brain and both year levels have made model brains to consolidate their learning.
We look forward to continuing this learning and are confident of the positive outcomes, both health and academic, for our students.
Year 12 QCS Team Building Day
Our Year 12 OP students began their QCS program with a team building day on Burleigh Beach on the 11th February.
Students were separated into teams using a jigsaw of the flags of different countries and they had great fun painting their faces to reflect their teams.
They were challenged with a number of team building activities and all of our students demonstrated fantastic communication and cooperation skills.
The staff involved really enjoyed seeing such a cohesive and happy group of students work and play together and we are really looking forward to working with them throughout the year.
Our Year 12's followed up this team building day by writing down their personal commitment to the QCS team. Students will revisit these commitments later in the year.
It is fantastic to have such a positive start to the 2009 QCS program.

Our Homework Group is filling fast, so don't forget to book your child in. Signing in is as simple as filling out a short form, signing it, and returning it to the Middle School Office, or to me on the day.
I have been working with some of our students in their classes and I am amazed at how quickly they have settled in, and how enthusiastic they are to complete their work.
I know that some of our students were a little apprehensive at the end of last year about going up a grade, but I think they now realize that the work does get a little harder, but it is a progressive change. They also realize that their teachers will put the necessary scaffolding in place to help them get there. School is like building the Q1 building in Surfers Paradise. A lot of effort went into constructing the foundations so that the 70 plus floors would stand strong and tall and weather the storms that would buffer them.
At Varsity College, we build the strong foundations on which the higher learning will be built, with lots of scaffolding in place to support each level as the student progresses.

Student Banking
Varsity College P & C in conjunction with the Commonwealth Bank will be offering again a student banking service commencing this week. Banking is a life skill and we can all recall the thrill of seeing our first bank balance grow.
Each Thursday you child can participate by bringing their completed banking to the Administration Office. Their processed banking will be returned on Friday to their classroom.. Our wonderful Mrs Wendy Cousins volunteers for this role and the school benefits by way of a commission for any funds banked. If you are interested in getting an application form please contact Sue Jones on 55769394.
Collect a Cap
We will again be collecting caps this year so please start collecting the Norco caps marked Norco Community Cash. Each cap is worth ten cents and it is amazing just how much money we can raise. We hold a competition each term to select winners from Preparatory to Year 3 and from Years 4-6. The class with the most caps wins a class prize, so ask family and friends to collect caps for you and your class could be the first winner of 2009!!
Volunteers
Are you interested in helping out around the school? Our Primary Canteen and Primary and Secondary Uniform Shop are always looking for volunteers. The P & C Association run these facilities to provide a service to our school. The profits raised from these shops go back to the school in areas that the P & C Association & the school community identify as areas of need.
Your child loves to see you at your school and it is a great opportunity to meet other parents and carers. If you are new to the school it is also a great way to learn more about the school.
Attractive incentives are offered for your help as we recognize and appreciate our volunteers. So please, come and see our convenors, Fiona in the Canteen or Robina in the Uniform Shop. Your help would be most welcome.
P & C AGM 18 March 2009
Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for 6.15pm on 18 March, 2009. The meeting will be held on the Senior Campus in the Library. Our school runs from Prep to Year 12 and we have one P & C Association that encompasses the entire school, so we think having these meetings on the Senior Campus gives you a great opportunity to see more of the school. Separate information will be distributed explaining the different roles that our P & C Executive Committee hold. We welcome everyone.
