From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Last week the College P&C met to appoint a new Executive Team to lead the parent body for the next 12 months. It has been a very busy 12 months for the retiring P&C and their work in the school community has been invaluable. This team, lead by Mr Anthony Ricciardo, has undertaken some enormous tasks and the end results has been tremendous for the College. The introduction of the new College Sports uniform, the new management arrangements for the College After School Program, the re-introduction of fundraising activities and the College end of year Carols, were just some of the many activities that made a significant difference to each student at Varsity College. I would like to congratulate Anthony and his team, Ms Sharon Wyatt, Ms Sue Horkings, Ms Vicki Zairis, Ms Sharon Maher, Ms Sherelle Bitzios, Ms Kylie Robertson and Ms De Young, for their great work in 2008.

The P&C president for 2009 is Mr Greg Ewart. Greg has three boys attending the College from grade 1 to year 7. He is a local architect and runs his own business on the Gold Coast. Greg will bring a wonderful set of leadership skills to this position especially at a time when Varsity College embarks on a number of exciting new building projects. Greg will be ably supported by Ms Sue Horkings as secretary, Ms Sarah Castro as Treasurer and Vice Presidents, Mr Brett Saville (Senior School), Mr Anthony Ricciardo (Middle School), Ms Elaine Cassar (Junior School) and Ms De Young (Preparatory School). This team will be working to ensure that all students at Varsity College are catered for in the best way possible. I would encourage each of you to start attending P&C meetings on the third Wednesday of each month to find out ways that you can become more involved in the development of Varsity College as a school of excellence.

The Junior School assembly on Monday morning involved the badge presentation to students who have been elected to leadership positions for 2009. The College captains, Cameron Watts and Chanelle Rodger gave an inspiring speech that set the tone for this celebration of student leadership. Aside from the 600 students gathered for this event, there were also many parents and families who witnessed their children receiving their badges. It was wonderful to see how much leadership talent we have at Varsity College and that from such a young age, these students are prepared to take on responsibilities for various areas of our College. I commend their intentions and motivation.

Our sporting program has commenced in earnest with Varsity teams from Years 5-9 competing last week. In the last two years there has been a significant focus on ensuring that student participation is the key focus of our interschool sport program. As a result, we have a record number of students involved in the sports program this year. Another change to the College sports program involves the arrangement of Years 8 & 9 teams who now play for 5 whole days each semester rather than a half day each week. This has reduced the cost, time spent out of class and also increased the amount of sport in which each child can participate. We are hopeful that this new model will also allow more students to experience interschool sport in a positive way. All teams performed exceptionally well and I thank the staff who committed their time to ensuring that Varsity College has made such a positive start to interschool sport this year.

eNews

Dear Parent,

As a part of our school's new approach towards the way we communicate with you, we are excited to inform you that we now offer interactive, graphically rich, full colour electronic newsletters to all our parents.

The concept of eNews is similar to the printed paper newsletters which we already send out regularly, but with added benefits - eNews is personally delivered directly to your email inbox via the Internet. This delivery method has many advantages.

It is cost effective, time efficient and personalised to your name. Most importantly the school receives this service completely free of charge from Australian Newsletter Services who also supply our paper newsletters with the help of advertisers.

To receive this service all you need is a computer with internet access and email. Those who currently do not have internet access at home can still receive our traditional paper newsletter.

With our eNews service the distance between the school and the parents will be further shortened as the parents will be able to experience firsthand what activities the school is currently undertaking and the latest information on Academic, Health, Sport and other areas that may interest you. This way the whole family can share the success stories of your children as these eNewsletters can be forwarded to anyone with email.

To sign up for our eNewsletter please type the link below into the address bar of your browser. Australian Newsletter Services has made the signup process automated and only takes a few minutes when prompts are followed. Your email address will only be used to send out school eNews and nothing else.

This environment friendly approach to communication means that hard copy distribution of the Newsletter will be drastically reduced over the next 10 weeks. Classroom Newsletter distribution will cease at the end of Term 1. Hard copy Newsletters will be available at Campus Administration Offices from the beginning of Term 2.

Prepatory School News

From the Head of Preparatory School

It is hard to believe that it has been 9 weeks since we returned from Christmas holidays. Our students have done an amazing job of settling into the routines and expectations of our school. A huge congratulations to all students for their excellent behaviour and attitude towards their learning this term. A special mention must go to our Preparatory students who have come such a long way in Term 1. It is very rewarding to see them now moving around our school with confidence.

Parent Interviews

Parents will have the opportunity to attend a parent teacher interview during Weeks 10 and 11 of this term. The focus of the Term 1 interview is the sharing of information on how each child is performing in Literacy and Numeracy and how they have settled into the school year. Teachers enjoy having this time to talk with you individually about your child's progress and we encourage all parents to attend. Please ensure that you have returned your form indicating your preferred time. Interviews will be held in your child's classroom. All students will receive a formal written report at the end of Term 2.

Naplan Testing

Our Year 3 students last week sat the 2008 NAPLAN (National Literacy and Numeracy) test. Sitting this test gave students the opportunity to experience not only the content of such a test but to also complete the test under strict testing conditions - something that not many Year 3 students are uses to. Our Year 3 teachers have done an outstanding job in preparing students for the test while still covering the expectations of the school's curriculum program. Parents of Year 3 students will receive information about the testing program at the parent teacher interviews and a parent session will be held early Term 2. All Year 3 students will be
required to complete the 2009 Literacy and Numeracy tests in mid May.

P-3 Cross Country

We are currently planning our P-3 cross country which will be held on Wednesday 8 April. All students in Preparatory through to Year 3 will participate in a cross country event to promote fun and fitness. Parents are welcome to join us on the day - information regarding times and what students will need to bring will be sent home closer to the event. With this being the final newsletter for the term, we would like to thank all our wonderful families for your support this term. We wish all students a safe and fun Easter break. With Monday 20 April a Student Free Day we look forward to seeing all students return to school on Tuesday 21 April.

"Funky" Dancing

The Preparatory and Year 1 students have responded well to weekly drama workshops as their skills, self confidence and willingness to give things a go have slowly increased over the past 8 weeks. Our lessons are broken down into three sections, all important to get the students involved, comfortable and ready to go back to class. Our warm ups have been fun with some 'Funky' dancing, movement activities, partner work and vocal warm ups. We then move into the focus of the lessons where preps have been dramatising stories, creating movement to music and exploring some simple activities where improvisation skills have been called upon. We finish with a quiet story so all students are settled before returning back to classrooms. The Year 1 drama program has been devised to support the great Drama VIP unit that the students are working on. Through discussions with Year 1 teachers I have been able to work with the students introducing them to drama skills and activities that they need for Term 1. We have explored freeze frames, what it means to be 'in role' and 'out of role', Gossip Mill, soundscapes, tap and talk and improvisation skills. It has been a great start to the extended Arts program that Varsity now offers.

Chinese Extension Program

Varsity College Junior School has initiated a new Chinese Extension class for all Year 6 students who are interested in extending their Chinese speaking and understanding. This program runs twice a week for 40 minutes per lesson. Activities are conversation based and more practical, aligned to things we do in our daily life.

As a result, students gain an interest in practising the language in their day to day life. The aim is to enhance students' understanding of Chinese and have more opportunities to practise it. More importantly, it develops their appreciation of the Chinese culture.

There are 25 students signed up for the program at the moment. They have made great progress and interact well.

Junior News

From the Head of Junior School

The Junior School has had an incredibly successful Term 1, with students challenged and engaged in a wide variety of learning programs. I continue to be amazed by the energetic and positive manner the children and staff continue to engage in the learning and teaching program each day. I have also been impressed by the positive commitment to the wearing of the College uniform, especially with the wearing of the black, polishable, lace-up shoes with the dress uniform. Commitment to these values directly link to positive student attitudes and enhanced student learning. I ask that the school community commits to maintaining these high standards in order to maintain the current supportive school environment for the remainder of the year.

Parent - Teacher Interviews

Over the next two weeks, parents will be offered the opportunity to meet with classroom teachers to review and analyse their child's progress. I encourage all parents to avail themselves of this opportunity to enhance their understanding and further commit themselves to their child's learning journey.

Effective parent - teacher partnerships have a positive influence on students' future achievements.

NAPLAN Testing 2009

Parents of Year 5 students are invited to attend a NAPLAN information session on Wednesday, April 1 from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. The focus of the session will be to provide parents with a greater understanding of the tests and provide strategies that parents can use to prepare their children. The information session will be held in the 5M classroom. The NAPLAN tests will be held in May and will be based on Literacy and Numeracy. Parents can access further information on www.naplan.edu.au .

Chess Club - Term 2

Both Chess Clubs have been running quite successfully during Term 1. A large number of students competed in the first round of the interschool Chess Teams' Tournament held at Palm Beach State School on 12 March. Many new students have joined Chess Club this year and the number of beginners augurs well for the future of Varsity chess.

Registration for Term 2 is currently underway. An important change to timetabling has been made for the Junior Club ( Knights). In an effort to reduce the number of interruptions to lessons and to avoid clashing with other enrichment activities, Junior Chess Club will now be scheduled as a before school activity running from 7.30am to 8.30am on Tuesday in the Resource Centre.

Varsity Integrated Projects

Varsity Integrated Projects are being brought to a close in Years 4, 5 and 6 as we near the end of Term 1. Year 4 students have conducted an extensive study of the Industrial Revolution, the First Fleet and white settlement including an indigenous viewpoint through their VIP Changing Times. Year 5 students now have a sound knowledge of democratic principles which would have contributed to their appreciation of the recent state election. In addition, they have developed an awareness of issues affecting their health and wellbeing in the VIP Well, Well, Well. Year 6 has investigated different systems of government and the power of persuasive speech-making in their VIP Power to the People.

Literacy and Numeracy

Over the past few weeks, teams of teachers have developed and fine-tuned our Term 2 curriculum, especially literacy and numeracy, as well as the forthcoming integrated projects.

Essential Learnings

Year 4 will embark upon a study of the impact of introduced and feral species on our ecosystems. Year 5 will investigate the forces of magnetism and gravity on a local and cosmic scale. Year 6 students will chronicle their construction of dynamic demonstrations of physics and Newton's laws of Junior News 4 motion. All VIPs are designed to deliver Education Queensland's Essential Learnings, the core of our state curriculum. Junior school teachers have invested a great deal of time and effort into designing quality units of work that are rigorous, relevant and engaging.

Specialist Subjects

The classroom curriculum will continue to be enhanced by specialist subjects including music, dance, drama, Chinese language, art and physical education.

Enrichment Opportunities

Further enrichment opportunities will be on offer throughout Term 2 including Running Club, Chess Club, Computer Science, Maths Olympiad, M.A.N.T.I.S. Behaviour Management, University of NSW competitions, Queensland Academies' Young Scholars' program and our instrumental music program. The HOD's window problem has kicked off for 2009 with a simple yet challenging puzzle. Check it out on the window of the Head of Department office opposite the music block.

QCAT's

Queensland Comparable Assessment Tasks will be implemented during the next few weeks in Years 4 and 6. Students will complete a small investigative task in English that will allow teachers to make comparable judgements of student performance across the year level that are consistent with the rest of the state. Optional tasks in mathematics and science may follow. There is no special preparation required on the part of students for these tasks. Results for this task will feature on the report card at the end of semester.

Sports News

It's been a very busy week in sport with both cluster and interschool sport starting. I've received some excellent feedback about our teams. On a personal level being involved in the cluster cricket and Year 7 rugby league (my dad is so proud), I've been impressed with the standard of play and sportsmanship displayed. Unfortunately, due to our increased participation, we are out of jerseys. Some students have missed out and teams are having to share. So here comes the plea... can I ask all students and parents to search at home for any jerseys which belong to Varsity College and return them to Miss Tewes. I believe that some have ‘mysteriously' gone missing prior to our fabulous library borrowing system.

Year 8 & 9 Central Cluster

Our first ever cluster sport day was successful with our students competing against Nerang SHS, Southport SHS, Miami SHS, Hillcrest College and the Health Science Academy. I found a new appreciation for the patience required in 25 over cricket as it was a big day. Some of our teams played four games during the day but most managed three maximum. The feedback from coaches was positive, claiming that they could see improvement skill wise from our students as the day progressed. Now that our students know what the day involves, they can be better prepared for next week, Tuesday 31st March 2009 which is our next whole sport day.

Interschool Sport

Congratulations to our Year 7's who participated in interschool sport on Friday. Our team of the week was Mr Cane's AFL team who thrashed St Vincents 90-12. Our boys' soccer teams coached by Mr Irwin also had very convincing wins against Caningeraba. Keep up the great work year 7's! Cross Country is coming up on Friday 1st May. It's great weather for running with our cooler mornings, so get out there and get fit. I promise you'll feel better!

Somerset Celebration of Literature

On Wednesday 18th March our Year 7 students had the opportunity to attend the Somerset Celebration of Literature Conference. Students in Year 7 are currently immersed in a Varsity Integrated Project focussing on literature. Students were able to spend time with well known authors and learn about ideas and strategies for creating stories. Students and teachers had an excellent day as they were inspired and also entertained by authors such as Andy Griffiths and Deborah Abela.

Excursion Payments

Due to booking buses and venues, Varsity College has cut off dates for all excursions. We are unable to process late payments which can be upsetting for students who miss out on attending a planned event. Please ensure that you check the cut off dates for each excursion and also return medical forms.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews will be occurring in these last three weeks of term. If you haven't already, please make an appointment with your child's foundation teacher using the letters sent home recently. Tuesday the 7th April will be our main night with foundation teachers available until 7pm.

Middle School Camp News

Middle School Camps are an exciting part of our school year. Although these camps happen in Term 3, there are huge organisational processes that need to happen in order for a successful and rewarding week. To enable us to organise and cater for our Middle School Camps, please ensure your child returns their camp preference form as early as possible.

Have a great week!

Immunisation Program for Year 8 Students

By now you should have received details from your child about Queensland Health's annual School Based Vaccination Program. For Year 8 students, the program provides free Hepatitis B and Chickenpox vaccinations. Female students will also be offered the vaccination for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as protection against cervical cancer.

Only students who have a completed and signed consent form/s (ticked yes) will be vaccinated. If you would like your child to be vaccinated, please fill in the consent form/s and return the form/s to the local council in the reply paid envelope provided.

If you do not wish your child to be vaccinated, or your child has already been vaccinated with the offered vaccines, it is still important that you complete the form/s (ticking no) and return them in the post. This helps Queensland Health to ensure that all students have been given the opportunity to participate in this program.

Senior School News

From the Head of Senior School

Senior Exam Shutdown

As we draw to the end of Term 1, senior students should be busy preparing for their exams. Each term students are given Assessment Calendars to assist them in organising their study schedules. These should be glued into their Student Organisers. There will be a shutdown period in the final week of school leading up to the Easter vacation. During this time most students in Years 11 and 12 are only required to attend school for their scheduled exams. Vet students have a shutdown period on the Monday and Tuesday only, with regular classes running for the remainder of the week, including late classes. Regular senior classes will run on Thursday April 9.

Parents can assist their children during the stressful exam period by ensuring they get plenty of rest, eat well and be organised for their assessment. Utilising the Student Organiser effectively should also assist students in planning their study and recreation time effectively.

Interim Reports and Parent Teacher Evening

Interim reports were sent home with every senior student last week. This gives an indication of how each student has been working in class in each subject. An invitation to attend Parent-Teacher evening was extended to all parents for Tuesday 24th of March. This is an informal forum which gives parents the opportunity to discuss your child's progress in greater detail. The next reporting period will be at the end of the semester.

Attendance

This term the Senior School has focussed on student attendance. Research shows strong links between attendance at school and the results achieved by students. Regular attendance checks have been done in every lesson to ensure students are in every scheduled class - because EVERY LESSON COUNTS. Letters have also been sent home in relation to lateness. The senior school commences at 8.15am each day. This early start enables the flexibility in our timetable to allow students to finish early on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Term One Achievements

Term 1 has allowed students in the senior school to be involved in several events that raised their awareness as citizens. The Free-Dress Day from P- 12 raised funds for the Bushfire and Flood Appeal and the Shave for a Cure event raised money toward leukaemia research. Events such as these enable students to be conscious of the society around them and promote active citizenship. There are many opportunities provided within Varsity College for students to be involved in, the Rowing Program, Basketball Excellence, Rugby League competition, Dance Club, Orchestra, Stage Band and Vocal groups. Students are encouraged to extend their learning beyond the classroom and these opportunities will continue in Term 2.

Young Fashionistas

The ‘Fashion Incubator', a newly created initiative between the Gold Coast City Council, TAFE and a number of high profile training organisations is offering creative students an opportunity they would not ordinarily have the chance to experience. The aim is to identify, support and nurture the many fashion design aspirants from local schools.

Three Varsity College students took advantage of a free six week course offered by the Fashion Incubator, which will see one of the participants being offered a $2,500.00 design scholarship. I visited one of our students undertaking this course last Monday afternoon for a first hand observation of what the students are studying.

Varsity College students participating in this course are Year 12 students Yasmin Cunningham (pictured above) and Tanya Lhaochareonwong and Year 11 student Ellakai Pearce. The girls have also been invited to attend the NRA Queensland Fashion Awards which will be telecast live.

What a great experience for these students. I will announce any future opportunities such as this should they become available in the future.

Good Luck!

We have many students who apply for traineeships and recently we had quite a large number apply for Certificate III in Tourism with Warner Bros. (Movie World, Sea World, Wet ‘n' Wild etc.). We also had approximately 60 students apply for casual positions at the yet-to-opened Big W store at Robina Town Centre. I would just like to wish all these students the very best of luck with their applications.

Polynesia Jam - Performing Arts Group

This year Varsity College has established a performing arts group called Polynesia Jam. The group's mandate is to use cultural music and dance as a form of expression which can then be used to learn the fundamentals of creative arts performances. The group uses Polynesian dance as a foundation. However, it is not mandatory to use strictly Polynesian dances. As the resources and expertise become available, other cultural dances/songs shall be utilised.

As part of Harmony Day, Polynesia Jam presented a New Zealand Maori Cultural Experience. This unique production presented a Maori traditional powhiri or welcome ceremony through song and dance. The art of Haka (war dance) and Ta Moko (traditional Maori tattoo) was a highlight of the performance. Several students learnt the Haka and were given temporary Ta Moko on their faces. The only aspect which was missing was the joy of eating hangi (traditional method of cooking food under the ground). Perhaps this can be organised some time in the future, much to the delight of our kiwi students. It was an honour for our performing students to be involved in such an important community event.

Polynesia Jam is open to all Varsity College senior students or staff who would like to learn about other cultures and discover how diverse the performing arts can be. At present the members of Polynesia Jam come from Rarotonga, Niue, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, South Africa, Thailand and New Zealand. All are welcome.

Many thanks to the Year 9 Technical Crew, the music and dance departments, parents, support staff and all those who helped Polynesia Jam with their first official public performance. This is an exciting initiative which explores the rich cultural environment that Varsity College is renowned for. From the Hawaiian language we say, mahalo, which means thank you.

SEP News

The highlight of the week, according to our students, is the acquisition of two Wii Consoles and extra remote controls. One console will be housed in the Junior School and one in the Middle School. I have to admit that I am totally ignorant when it comes to the finer points of Wii sportsmanship, but I'm counting on our students to teach me before the end of term, and I'm sure I will have no shortage of tutors once the word gets out.

We have seen a significant increase in the number of students coming to Homework Group on Wednesday afternoons. To cater for the extra students, Miss Schulz now works with the Year 7 students in the classroom next door to the Middle Fine Foods room.

Mr Millett is looking for traineeships and apprenticeships for our students again this year, and has been successful in finding positions for some of our senior students.

This year the SEP is planning another trip away in Camp Week. Students have already cast their votes, and while Tasmania was high on the list, we've had to consider the costs of getting there, and so Sydney is the safe bet at the moment. We have started planning, and will keep you informed of developments.

The Applied Behaviour Analysis course started last Tuesday night and is proving to be very successful. The presenter is Kirsten Aspin, who is sharing with us some very down-to-earth and practical strategies to use with students with Autism, but could be successfully used with all students. The participants include staff from Varsity College and other schools, parents, and university students studying Psychology.

The Harmony Day performance last Friday was an amazing event. A new teacher to Varsity, Mr. James Grace, coached the students who performed a number of traditional Maori dances, including the Haka for the Year 9 classes as part of their studies. I personally learned a lot about Maori traditions from the information presented by Mr. Grace and the students. As a tribute to the multi-cultural population of Varsity College, each of the student performers greeted the audience in the traditional way of theirculture.

Mr. Grace is a great example of the dedication and talent of teachers at Varsity College, which, together with the great support from parents and the community, make Varsity College the great school that it is.

Remember:

There can be hope only for a society which acts as one big family,
not as many separate ones.

Term 2

For your convenience the Prep/Junior uniform shop will open the first Tuesday of Term 2 & 3 due to the Monday being pupil free days. Other than this the normal days and hours will continue.

Stocktake

Both Uniform shops will be closed Thursday April 9th for stock take and reopen Tuesday April 21st. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Inter School Sports Socks

These are available from both Uniform Shops at a cost of $8.00.

Small Caps

Thank you for your patience with the delay in these. I have been informed from our supplier that they are at customs. As soon as they are released and delivered we will put a sign on the roller door to let you know they are in. The cost will be $11.00. We have plenty of the larger size in stock. Bucket and wide brim hats are also an option.

Winter Uniform

I am hoping the new style will be released soon from customs and ready for Term 2. The new jacket and track pants are in a shower proof fabric with a slight change in style. Our current style is being discounted by 15% and has a 3 Year period where it can still be worn. We have available most sizes available at both shops.

Coathangers

If you have any spare unused coat hangers, the Junior Uniform Shop would greatly appreciate them. This will assist us with keeping our donation rooms tidy and we also use them for our second hand uniforms.

Southern Cross Cultural Exchange

Southern Cross Cultural Exchange, an Australian not-for-profit organisation specialising in international student exchange programs, is seeking volunteer host families for high school students scheduled to arrive in Australia in July 2009 from Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Austria, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Brazil, Canada and the USA. Host families can choose from students staying for a range of either 3, 5 or 10 months. They all attend local high schools whilst they are in Australia. The main purpose of cultural exchange is to challenge youth towards international understanding and tolerance, encourage further learning, self knowledge and awareness - invaluable characteristics in today's world. We organise all the flights, school enrolment, transportation, insurance and support systems. Just imagine your son or daughter having a brother or sister for a few months
from another country.

It's a great opportunity for Australian students to learn that there is a world of variety and opportunity waiting for them - different languages, foods, sports, customs, and perhaps an overseas visit to look forward to later on.
