From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We have reached the end of what has been a very busy, but successful term
at Varsity College.  The introduction of the new VIP curriculum model has been an outstanding success with staff, students and many parents indicating high level support for these projects and the topics that have been studied.  I have certainly found that classes have been fully engaged in lessons and students have been very proactive in their learning so far.  The College Curriculum Committee has implemented a review process that is continually evaluating the new curriculum to ensure that it remains rigorous and challenging, but also allows for all students to experience success in their learning.  This evaluation is an ongoing process and will continue to be managed by this committee to ensure that the P-9 curriculum program is continuous, seamless and meets the essential learning framework that is a mandated requirement.

This term the College has held a number of very successful sporting events, including 3 swimming carnivals, and commenced its interschool sports program.  The support of parents at these events has been wonderful and with the cross country events being held very shortly, I would ask that you continue your support of our sports program and come along to cheer our students to victory.  We have increased the number of students participating in sport considerably this year, which is a wonderful achievement.  With so many more students playing sport for Varsity College, the team spirit at venues has increased considerably.  It is a great credit to the staff who support the sports program to have so many students involved.  My thanks go to these staff for their generosity and commitment in offering students a very positive school sports experience.

This term has also seen considerable progress in the development of new facilities for Varsity College.  The Senior School has been very crowded for some time now and the need for new facilities was first identified some years ago.  To this point in time, we have managed to squeeze into our existing buildings, but as the College continues to grow, we know that as of next year this will no longer be an option.  This term, I have worked very hard with Education Queensland to design a rooming solution for Varsity College which will enable our students to experience purpose built facilities for the education of Senior School students.  The plans for the new facilities are currently being finalised and I hope to show the College Community these plans early next term.

The Federal Government's `Building the Education Revolution` will also provide Varsity College with other facilities that will improve the educational opportunities for all of our students.  While the details of this funding are still being developed, I am very confident that the College will receive a substantial grant to support our school's development.  More will unfold in Term 2 and I will keep you informed fully as further information becomes available.

There are many things that the College community can look forward to for the remainder of this year.  The Primary School musical is in full swing for a September production and we all wait with great expectation for what will be a great new addition to the College program.  Our College bands are in full rehearsal for the Eisteddfod program later in the year.  The bands have already performed well and I am sure that when you hear them you will be surprised at how very good they are.  An addition to our normal performances will be ‘Varsity Under the Stars' gala where our bands will be featured in September.  This will give parents and the Varsity community the opportunity to listen to our College bands. This community orientated gala also features the very best talent on the Gold Coast.  I will let you know further information about this evening early next term once dates have been finalised.

The College Anzac Day Ceremony will be held on Friday April 24. Everybody is aware of the significance of this event and the time and effort that Ivan Brkich puts in to ensure our students truly understand the sacrifices of our servicemen in the protection of our country.  This is one of the most important events in the College calendar and something that many students look forward to each year.

Please do not forget the continuing sports program in Term 2 with cross country events, interschool sports and Basketball Excellence invitational games that form part of the broader sports program.

As you can see by this snapshot, there are many things that we can look forward to in 2009. I would like to finish by wishing everyone a happy Easter.  I am sure that everyone is looking forward to the break and the opportunity to recharge the batteries.  Please keep safe and I look forward to sharing further news with you next term.

eNews

Dear Parent,

As a part of our school's new approach towards the way we communicate with you, we are excited to inform you that we now offer interactive, graphically rich, full colour electronic newsletters to all our parents.

The concept of eNews is similar to the printed paper newsletters which we already send out regularly, but with added benefits - eNews is personally delivered directly to your email inbox via the Internet. This delivery method has many advantages.

It is cost effective, time efficient and personalised to your name. Most importantly the school receives this service completely free of charge from Australian Newsletter Services who also supply our paper newsletters with the help of advertisers.

To receive this service all you need is a computer with internet access and email. Those who currently do not have internet access at home can still receive our traditional paper newsletter.

With our eNews service the distance between the school and the parents will be further shortened as the parents will be able to experience firsthand what activities the school is currently undertaking and the latest information on Academic, Health, Sport and other areas that may interest you. This way the whole family can share the success stories of your children as these eNewsletters can be forwarded to anyone with email.

To sign up for our eNewsletter please type  the link below into the address bar of your browser. Australian Newsletter Services has made the signup process automated and only takes a few minutes when prompts are followed. Your email address will only be used to send out school eNews and nothing else.

This environment friendly approach to communication means that hard copy distribution of the Newsletter will be drastically reduced over the next 10 weeks. Classroom Newsletter distribution will cease at the end of Term 1.  Hard copy Newsletters will be available at Campus Administration Offices from the beginning of Term 2.

Thank you

Junior School News

From the Head of Junior School

I would like to start this week's newsletter article by congratulating the entire school community for a highly successful first term. Wonderful achievements have been made in all four pillars of Academics, the Sports, the Arts and Community programs. Students have also displayed excellent behaviour and have worn the College uniform with great pride.

Term 2 will be an extremely busy ten weeks, with Life Education, ANZAC Day assemblies, NAPLAN testing, and Year 6 Dreamworld excursions just an example of the highlights to look forward to. Add to this the end of Semester reporting and Public Holidays, and you start to realise how precious each school day will be. In summary, every day counts and it is important that children attend school every day unless illness prevents them from doing so. It is also vital that children arrive prior the starting bell at 8:35am and remain at school for the full school day.

Virtual Classroom

A Junior School Virtual Classroom is now available for parents to access up to date information, announcements, calendar dates, and links to external educational websites. It is anticipated that the site will be updated on a weekly basis. Parents can access the site by following the links listed below.

  1. Website:           www.elearn.eq.edu.au
  2. User ID:            parent226
  3. Password:         password09
  4. Click on ‘Varsity College Junior School - Parent Information' in right hand corner

NAPLAN Testing 2009

Preparations are now well underway for Year 5 students to complete the NAPLAN tests from May 12 to May 14. The tests will focus on Literacy (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) and Numeracy (Probability and Chance, Number, Space, Measurement and Data). Parents can access further information on www.naplan.edu.au or by viewing other NAPLAN related websites listed on the Junior School Virtual Classroom.

Winter Uniform

The Varsity College Winter Uniform consists of all summer uniform requirements with the addition, on a needs basis, of a Varsity College jacket or jumper and Varsity College tracksuit pants. College policy does not permit the wearing of coloured t-shirts under the school uniform and / or non-Varsity jumpers.

On behalf of the Junior School staff, I would like to wish all members of the Varsity school community a safe and enjoyable Easter break.

Varsity Junior Joggers

Varsity Junior Joggers is up and running (oops -please excuse the pun) quite strongly. We are happy to record healthy numbers of children and a few brave parents joining us on Mon, Tues, Wed and Thursday mornings on our eternal quest of running around in circles. Please don't be shy - if you want to start training for the Gold Coast Marathon or you would just like to improve your general fitness in an uplifting environment - then the Varsity Junior Oval is the place to be.

Hall of Fame Recipients

Congratulations to Matthew McMichael on achieving the remarkable distance of 400km. Congratulations to Dylan Bagley on achieving his first 100km milestone.

Runner Profile

Name:                            Matthew McMichael

Year Level                       6

Favourite Foods:              Pizza

Favourite Running Music:  Black and Gold

Attitude to Sport:
I love it. Doesn't matter what it is - if it's sport I love it!

Matthew runs 7 days a week. On the weekends he runs with his Dad and at every possible opportunity he runs with the running club. His goal for the future is to be in the air force. He also wants to reach 700 km by the end of 2009.

Beep Test

Mrs Maddison is going to run a Beep Test on the last Friday of every month for students and parents interested in measuring their aerobic fitness. The multistage fitness test is a commonly used maximal running aerobic fitness test. It is also known as the 20 meter shuttle run test. The first test is scheduled for 8am Friday 24 April - weather permitting. The venue is the Junior school basketball courts. Bring along runners, water bottle and all your endurance skills! Other test dates will be Friday 29 May and Friday 26 June 2009.

Gold Coast Marathon

It's that time of the year where we have to start organising the Varsity College Gold Coast Marathon Team. Last year was our first effort at participating and we had great success with more than 50 children and members of the Varsity community running under the Varsity banner. A number of children recorded excellent times (one child won his age group) and a few parents participated in the full marathon. It was a really inspiring event and this year we are hoping that we have a bigger Varsity team. This year the race is being held on Sunday 5 July. We intend on setting up a team tent in the corporate area complete with BBQ and urn so runners and carers can gather before and, more importantly, after the race. Last year it was tremendous to hear the children comparing times, proudly displaying their hard earned gold medals and excitedly sharing race stories.

By competing as a team we receive a discount on race entry fees and also an early bird discount. Student entries will be partially subsidised.

Please note that age is culculated as at Sunday 5 July 2009.   All events must conclude by 2pm

There is no minimum age for the 5km Run/Walk however all entrants under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a registered parent/guardian for the entire duration of the race and the accompanying adult must  takes full responsibility for the safety of the entrant under 12.

The 2.5 km distance is roughly equivalent to 4.5 laps of our Junior oval and the 4km is about 7 laps. Most children who are attending Junior Joggers are already working their way towards comfortably completing that distance. Mrs Apanui and Mrs Maddison will again run with the children aged under 10 but also welcome any carers who wish to accompany their child.

Further entry details will be handed out to the children early in Term 2.

Interested parents are more than welcome to contact Mrs Lisa Maddison or Mrs Jess Apanui with any questions regarding our team entry. We would love to see a strong parent representation and encourage anyone who feels that they are up to the 5km walk/run, the 10km run or the amazing half or full marathon component to join us on Sunday 5 July.

Origami Club

This term various Year 6 students have ben taking part in Origami club with Ms. Barr on Tuesday afternoons. We've been learning different ways of folding and different bases in preparation for more complex creations. Some basic origami that we have made this term have been a frog, a balloon and a bunny rabbit. All students should be commended for their concentration and dedication to Origami.

Off the Shelf - Library News

Library Returns and Holiday Loans

Just a request to parents to follow up with any overdues your children may have from this term and send them back to the library. Students can return or renew any items they have by Tuesday 21 April. Hopefully your child has also borrowed some great books so they can enjoy some egg-citing reading over the Easter holiday!!

Student Id Cards

Just another reminder - All students must show their student ID card to borrow any item from the library .. so parents please remind your children to make it a habit to bring their ID card to school everyday in a wallet. So far we are getting about 95% of students at the loans desk with their cards ready.

Magazines

We have a comfy coffee table area in the library where students can enjoy some relaxed reading with magazines. Do you have any suitable magazines lying around home that you have finished with that could be used here? Please bring them in to Ms Fischer for the kids to flick through.

Did You Know

Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox which is 20 March. So this year Easter Sunday occurs on 12 April as the full moon is on Friday 10 April. 23 March 2008 was the earliest Easter any of us will see - unless you are 96 years old and saw it in 1913. The next time Easter will be that early will be 219 years away on 23 March 2228.

And life and love and peace are all new born. ~

Sports News

Interschool Cluster Sport for Years 8 & 9 was cancelled on Tuesday the 31st March due to rain. A make up day has been arranged for the first Tuesday back after Easter which is Tuesday 21st April.  This means that the first three weeks back are Cluster Sport weeks.

Another important date is Friday 1st May which is our school Years 7-12 Cross Country.  We are aware that this is also a Year 7 Interschool Sport day and have made appropriate arrangements to accommodate both events.  Further information will be sent out at the start of Term 2.

Sport Fees are now well overdue.  You have been invoiced and I would really appreciate if families can start addressing their outstanding fees.

Lastly, JERSEYS!  Can all families please check at home for any sports clothing belonging to Varsity College?  These uniforms need returning as we don't have enough for our sporting teams.  Any returns to Miss Tewes or the Varsity College Library.

Anzac Day Commemoration

This year, the Senior and Middle Schools will be holding their Anzac Day Commemoration on Friday, the 24th April. The 60 - 70 minute service will commence at approximately 9am.

The ceremony, which will be run by the school leaders, will follow the extremely successful format of previous years.  A number of organisations will be represented. These organisations are: Legacy, Mudgeeraba R.S.L., Korean Veterans, Vietnam Veterans, The War Widows Guild - Gold Coast, Ex - P.O.W.s, Army Reserve, Army Cadets and Canungra Land Warfare Centre.

Parents are also invited to attend and those wishing to attend the commemoration are asked to phone the school to register their intent to do so. This will assist with planning the seating arrangements on the day.

On the day, parents will need to sign in at the Senior Administration Building as per Workplace Health and Safety Guidelines. Please be aware of and abide by the parking regulations.

A veteran attending last year's ceremony was booked and, while the fine was eventually waived, the G.C.C.C. has forewarned me that illegally parked vehicles will be fined.

A number of parents have also contacted the school in the past and expressed an interest in contributing to the Anzac Day activities. Parents may do so in several ways. Parents who have been involved in the armed services and/or are veterans of any organisations and who may be willing to talk to the students about their experiences are invited to contact the Anzac Day coordinator Mr. Ivan Brkich. After morning tea, there will be a 90 minute session during which various members of the different organizations will talk to the students.  (If I am unavailable at the time, please leave your contact details.)

Parents with any memorabilia that they are willing to put on display are also asked to contact Mr. Ivan Brkich.

Parents can also contribute to the significance of the day by encouraging their children to purchase the Anzac Day pins and badges that will soon be available. The Mudgeeraba R.S.L. supplies the school with Anzac Day pins and badges. The prices range from 50 cents to $2. $5 badges are also sold and a special box in which to store these badges is also available. (further details will be provided once the badges have arrived.)

The red poppy was very popular last year and would most likely be available again this year. The red poppy was a gold coin donation.

Parents can also assist by helping their sons and daughters by learning more about the significance of Anzac Day. Some excellent websites are: www.awm.gov.au; www.naa.gov.au/the_collection/defence/conflicts/ww1/ww1.html;
www.nla.gov.au/oz/histsite.html; http://www.hyperhistory.org

Any students whose family members have been recognised or decorated in any way are encouraged to wear or display this recognition at school not only on the day of the school's commemoration but also in the weeks leading up to the school's commemoration.

Please have your daughter or son contact Mr. Ivan Brkich (Senior School staffroom) so that the school can compile a register of those whose family members have been recognised and in what capacity.

Thank you for your assistance in making the Anzac Day ceremony a memorable one for today's youth.

Ivan Brkich

Senior School News

From the Head of Senior School

This week most senior school students will be undertaking tests in many of their subjects. The Year 11 and 12 students will be doing this in the exam shutdown schedule. These exams will finish on Wednesday 8th April and Thursday 9th will be a normal day with classes that all students are expected to attend. We hope students have been able to demonstrate their true abilities in these assessments by ensuring that they were adequately prepared before the tests.

Term 2 will commence on Tuesday 21st April and we hope to see all students in attendance. Not surprisingly, recent studies have shown that student attendance has a major impact on student achievement. For this reason we are emphasising to students and parents that "every day counts".  Term 2 is a ten week term and it will be a very busy one.

I am sure that both students and staff are looking forward to the upcoming break and I hope that all will return to school refreshed and ready to learn.

"They're Back!"......................Entertainment Books 2009

Entertainment Books are back!  We're aiming break our record this year for Entertainment Book sales!. The book costs $50 with $10 going back to the school. The savings that you can achieve are amazing. Each book has saved our existing buyers so much money!   Our Admin ladies in Prep and Junior always have their names down first to buy an Entertainment Book so speak to them about their savings!

The books were launched this weekend and will be ready for collection on Monday 6 April from the P & C Office. Would you like your child to collect your book? Contact Sue on 55769394 to organize this.

Books are valid from now until 1 June 2010.

Would you like to have look at a book? Displays will be at each Admin office.  If you would like to take a book home overnight and have a good look over a coffee, Sue can organize this too. You might just see what you can save in the comfort of your own home.

Mother's Day is just around the corner so what better gift for Mum than a year of  discounts, savings and lots of dinners out! No cooking, I like the sound of that!

To encourage our "new customers", I would like to ask the existing Entertainment Book holders if there are any vouchers you definitely will not be using. If so could you please donate them to the P & C.  We would like to hold a morning tea and offer our prospective buyers the opportunity to try a voucher out. This could be a "try before you buy".  If you would like to participate in this, just drop off your unused vouchers in an envelope marked to Sue Jones, P & C Office at any Admin office. We will notify you shortly of our Entertainment Book morning tea.

Do you work? Many of your colleagues might be interested, so why not send them an email letting them know Varsity College has Entertainment Books ready to be purchased. Ten dollars from every sale goes to the school so why not try it? Contact Sue on 55769394 or at pandc@varsitycollege.eq.edu.au and I can email a flyer for you to distribute.

Risk Management Strategy

Queensland Education and the Qld Council of Parents & Citizens Association,(QCPCA) have requested that all P & C's adopt a Risk Management Strategy. The Varsity College P & C Risk Management Strategy was launched last year and was reaffirmed at the P & C Annual General Meeting, for all volunteers working within our school.

It has been introduced to enhance our student protection by:

  • working to make schools safe and supportive places
  • taking action to prevent students being harmed at school
  • reporting any suspicion you have that a student has been harmed or may be at risk of harm

In Term 2, Risk Management Registers will be placed in all classrooms in the Primary Campus as well as each Administration Office, Canteen and Uniform Shops on both campuses. Within this register is:

  • a Risk Management Introduction
  • a volunteer register
  • a response flowchart
  • Student Protection Fact Sheet
  • Standards of Behaviour Fact Sheet

All volunteers will also be asked to "Sign in" for each activity. Each volunteer will be asked to read the above information and acknowledge they have read this on the register. "I  Am A Volunteer" wristbands will be available for you to wear and return when volunteering.  These will be a great identifier for the students.

If you have any queries, please contact Sue Jones on 55769394 or at pandc@varsitycollege.eq.edu.au the We appreciate your help in supporting this strategy and by keeping our school safe.

Norco Collect A Cap

Thank you for all our Norco Collect A Caps.  Congratulations to our Term One Winners. Ten cents is raised from every cap and the funds certainly mount up, so keep them coming in!. The Easter break is a great time to start collecting for Term 2.  Ask your family and friends too!

Community Art Union

The  Community Art Union, came into being through the support of leading  business figures. It gives us the opportunity to fundraise for the school by selling raffle tickets.  For every $2 ticket we sell, $1 goes to the school, the other dollar goes to the local community. In these financial times, it is a "win win" situation for all!

Each year level will be given a time slot prior to September to sell tickets and when they have sold their allotted tickets, the next year level will receive their tickets.  The Preparatory year will receive the first installment of tickets on Tuesday 7 April. Tickets( sold & unsold) & correct money should be returned by 24 April in a sealed envelope marked Art Union, to the Preparatory Administration office. If you do not wish to participate, please return the unsold tickets in the same way.

If you would like to volunteer your help in organising your year level's raffle tickets, please contact Sue in the P & C Office on 55769394 or at the above email address.

We look forward to your support of Varsity  College & the local community!

Have a safe and happy Easter and we look forward to an exciting Term 2!

Uniform Shop News

Thank you to all volunteers who have helped us through Term 1. We really appreciate your support and efforts.  Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and earn credit vouchers towards purchasing your uniform requirements.

Also thank you to the parents who dropped off their spare coat-hangers.  They will be put to good use.
