From the Principal's Desk

During this week several of the staff were treated to a luncheon that was prepared, served and later cleared and cleaned.  The meal was very tasty, well presented and service of the food and refreshments very capably handled.

Staff were asked for feedback to assist Mr Witts and his Yr 12 Hospitality class in evaluating their function project.  As someone who normally does not have a big lunch, I had to walk around the school for a while.

Congratulations to Mrs Jacinta Delalande who has been appointed as the Head of Department - The Arts to Yeppoon State High from the start of Sem 2.  Mr Anthony Cox has been appointed to the position of HOD Industrial Design & Technology at our school to commence from next semester also.  He has been acting HOD at a Central Qld High School most recently.

In recent weeks, students from our school have had the opportunity to play Rugby League, Football, Netball and Aussie Rules in the interschool sport program.  I wish to recognize and congratulate the efforts of several of our staff who give up many hours often after school, to supervise / coach the teams.  Clint Holloway needs special recognition as he not only coaches several teams, but coordinates much of the program and encourages others to assist our students.  Thanks to all of these staff, whose efforts benefit our students.  Make sure that you mark down the Interhouse Athletics Carnival to be held on the last two days of the term, to come along and support the students and staff.

New Communication/Recording Devices and MP3/4 Policy

YSHS acknowledges the efficacy and reality of technological advances such as mobile phones.  They are an effective tool for parent and student communication, for example when normal routines of arriving at and leaving school may be varied.

The school is committed to establishing and sustaining a safe environment for students that best fosters quality learning.  Every student has a right to privacy, integrity, feeling safe and learning.

New technological devices can and do cause significant disruption to the learning and teaching of others and raise the following issues:

1. The constant interruption of students' learning caused by use of phones in classrooms, and subsequent lost time as the teacher deals with the issue.

2.The high value of many phones means that theft is an issue.

3.The integration of cameras into phones means that inappropriate filming can occur.

4. Use of texting in exams can lead to cheating and subsequent consequences.

5. Cyber bullying is increasing and becoming a real issue, not only in schools but in general society.

6. Misuse of these devices could lead to legal action.

Currently, students are not following the policy of turning phones off during class time, thus disrupting the learning and teaching process. Therefore, the school is developing a new policy to protect

students and their belongings and to reduce your child's exposure to bullying.

Suggested policies include:
- use of MP3/4, and iPod devices restricted to use before and after school and at lunch times

- no use of any recording devices in the school grounds

- phones switched off and out of sight during the course of the school day

- school phone available for urgent messages

- if students do not require a phone for parent contact, they are discouraged from bringing phones to school

- no liability is accepted by the school in the event of loss or theft.

- students bring these devices to school at their own risk.

We invite comments and suggestions from parents about the policy.  You can either

reply by mail to the school or via email to info@yeppoonshs.eq.edu.au.

Designated Parking Areas

Parents are reminded NOT to park in the designated bus parking zones in front of the school when collecting students, as this makes it very difficult for the pick up and drop off of students with excursions and local bus services.  This includes the area along Tabone Street down past the hall.

Blood Donation Day

On the 10th June, 26 students and teachers from Yeppoon State High participated in a Red Cross Blood drive.  We went down to the new Red Cross blood centre, next to the town hall in Normanby Street. We were supplied with pizza, biscuits, cheese and cordial while we waited outside, which more than made up for the minor prick made by the needle.

Every donation of blood can save up to three people's lives. One in three people will need donated blood some time during their lives, but only one in thirty people donate.  It's really a virtually painless procedure that can make so much difference to a person's life.  We hope to see more people sixteen and over next time we donate for a good cause.

Cybersafety - Information From The Business & It Faculty

Positive online behaviour - cyberbullying

What is cyberbullying?
"Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others".

Bill Belsey
www.cyberbullying.ca

Understanding cyberbullying and cyberstalking
Rather than face-to-face bullying, bullying and harassment now takes on a new form via mediums such as mobile phones, MSN messenger/chatrooms, social networking sites and email.

Why has cyberbullying increased?
Elements of cyberbullying set it apart from traditional bullying by:

* Being able to act anonymously

* Wide and rapid distribution

* No separation from home and school life - you can now be bullied 24/7

* Lack of face-to-face contact

Signs that a student might be experiencing cyberbullying are:
* Unexplained changes in behaviour

* Unexplained changes in mood - being withdrawn, depresssed, reluctant to talk to you or friends

* Isolation or not interacting with previous friends

* Avoiding school or certain classes

* Changes in the way they use their computer or their phone

Long-term or continuous bullying can have detrimental effects on the health of our kids. It is important to recognise the signs and minimise the opportunities for it to occur. As parents and teachers we need to understand how young people communicate and embrace the technology which has become so familiar to this generation.

Peace Club

THANKS TO LOCAL BUSINESSES
We're still celebrating the HUGE success of the Peace Club's fund-raising campaign for the Leukaemia Foundation.  Our special thanks goes to many local businesses who supported the "Shave for a Cure" event:

* Belinda Ksiazek and the team at EXPRESSIONS OF BEAUTY who provided a top-notch waxing service on the day - free of charge!

* Stacey Glover from ASTRO FLOWERS who donated a beautiful floral arrangement;

* AMCAL MAX (Yeppoon Central), CHEMMART (Emu Park Pharmacy), FRANGIPANI HAIR SALON, MKC HAIRDRESSING, and WAVELENGTHS FOR HAIR for donations of temporary hair colour. Also, the staff at EXPRESSIONS OF BEAUTY have kindly offered our students some wonderful discounts in the lead-up to the school formal:

* Full set of nails and make-up is now $120 (usually priced at $150)

* Tanning treatments - $30 per spray tan (or pay for five to get the sixth treatment free).

Thanks, again to all involved.  We're very fortunate to have such amazing models of community spirit.
