New technological devices can and do cause significant disruption to the learning and teaching of others and raise the following issues:
1. The constant interruption of students' learning caused by use of phones in classrooms, and subsequent lost time as the teacher deals with the issue.
2.The high value of many phones means that theft is an issue. 3.The integration of cameras into phones means that inappropriate filming can occur. 4. Use of texting in exams can lead to cheating and subsequent consequences. 5. Cyber bullying is increasing and becoming a real issue, not only in schools but in general society.
6. Misuse of these devices could lead to legal action. Currently, students are not following the policy of turning phones off during class time, thus disrupting the learning and teaching process. Therefore, the school is developing a new policy to protect students and their belongings and to reduce your child's exposure to bullying.
Suggested policies include:
- use of MP3/4, and iPod devices restricted to use before and after school and at lunch times
- no use of any recording devices in the school grounds - phones switched off and out of sight during the course of the school day - school phone available for urgent messages - if students do not require a phone for parent contact, they are discouraged from bringing phones to school - no liability is accepted by the school in the event of loss or theft. - students bring these devices to school at their own risk. We invite comments and suggestions from parents about the policy. You can either reply by mail to the school or via email to info@yeppoonshs.eq.edu.au. Lesley Andrews Deputy Principal Top
Designated Parking Areas Parents are reminded NOT to park in the designated bus parking zones in front of the school when collecting students, as this makes it very difficult for the pick up and drop off of students with excursions and local bus services. This includes the area along Tabone Street down past the hall. Top
Blood Donation DayOn the 10th June, 26 students and teachers from Yeppoon State High participated in a Red Cross Blood drive. We went down to the new Red Cross blood centre, next to the town hall in Normanby Street. We were supplied with pizza, biscuits, cheese and cordial while we waited outside, which more than made up for the minor prick made by the needle.
Every donation of blood can save up to three people's lives. One in three people will need donated blood some time during their lives, but only one in thirty people donate. It's really a virtually painless procedure that can make so much difference to a person's life. We hope to see more people sixteen and over next time we donate for a good cause. Top

Cybersafety - Information From The Business & It FacultyPositive online behaviour - cyberbullying
What is cyberbullying?
"Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others".

Understanding cyberbullying and cyberstalking Rather than face-to-face bullying, bullying and harassment now takes on a new form via mediums such as mobile phones, MSN messenger/chatrooms, social networking sites and email. Why has cyberbullying increased? Elements of cyberbullying set it apart from traditional bullying by: * Being able to act anonymously * Wide and rapid distribution * No separation from home and school life - you can now be bullied 24/7 * Lack of face-to-face contact Signs that a student might be experiencing cyberbullying are: * Unexplained changes in behaviour * Unexplained changes in mood - being withdrawn, depresssed, reluctant to talk to you or friends * Isolation or not interacting with previous friends * Avoiding school or certain classes * Changes in the way they use their computer or their phone Long-term or continuous bullying can have detrimental effects on the health of our kids. It is important to recognise the signs and minimise the opportunities for it to occur. As parents and teachers we need to understand how young people communicate and embrace the technology which has become so familiar to this generation. Top
