PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Congratulations to the Opti-Minds Team
who won their Social Science category on Saturday.
The members of the team include: Darryin Marriott, Rachel Clark, Dimity Dalzell, Mahnee Barry,
Geordie Williamson, Kathleen Petrie.
The team won over the judges with their creative, humorous ideas about the future of Queensland
depicting how it is a shadow of its former greatness in the year 2159 according to the challenge
brief. Queensland icons included Powderfinger, The Great Barrier Reef, XXXX Gold and Anna
Bligh. The team identified and brought these icons together in an intriguing story of a Qld where
music is banned in a ‘domed’ state to prevent the spread of swine flu. Interestingly, a new brand of
beer XXXX Platinum which is strangely implicated in the swine flu pandemic, is revealed to save
the Great Barrier Reef from climate change restoring Qld to its former greatness.
Congratulations team!
Congratulations to the Instrumental music groups who performed at the Gladstone Eisteddfod
recently. The Concert Band and Big Band received 1st places and the Strings Ensemble received
3rd place.
is scheduled for Thursday and Friday (10th & 11th September)
and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday ((14th, 15th and 16th September).
Note: Thursday & Friday (17th & 18th September)
ARE NORMAL SCHOOL DAYS

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT UPDATE
This has been a hectic year for everyone in all faculties, including the International Student
Program (ISP). We have welcomed and farewelled our Semester One students and already we
have nine new students who are settling in with their homestay families and classes this semester.
We also have one student, Isabella, who has decided to stay on for a further six months and finish
her senior schooling here in Yeppoon, which means we currently have ten international students in
the program from Brazil, Germany and Norway. By the end of next year we hope to build this
number to 20!
One major change to the program has been our staff. The first change was in Term Two when
Bettina Mann decided to return to teaching in primary school and Nicola Barlow stepped into her
role of Homestay Coordinator (HSC).
Mr Clayton Barry was the driving force behind the commencement of the ISP being delivered in our
school. His foresight and passion have been essential to the success of the program and we are
forever indebted to him for his efforts. Unfortunately for Yeppoon State High School however, he
has decided to follow his career goals and teach abroad in Brunei.
Fortunately for me, this brings us to the second change in staff, as I have taken on the role of
International Student Coordinator (ISC). I have been teaching at Yeppoon State High School since
2008, but my relationship with this school goes back 25 years, when I started my first year of high
school here in grade eight. This year marks the 20th anniversary of my graduation from YSHS and
I am proud to say that I am a past student of this dynamic, inclusive and multicultural school.
I firmly believe that having the ISP running in our school is equally beneficial for the international
and local students as well as providing potential, future tourism trade for the benefit of our
community.
While some things change, some stay the same and we continued the traditional Homestay BBQ
at Kemp Beach in week two this term, where all the families had the opportunity to meet and have
a relaxed, fully- catered breakfast before embarking on a mountain stroll overlooking the local
islands. There are many more activities the international students and their Homestay families are
able to participate in throughout the remainder of the year like caving, canoeing and perhaps
mountain limbing for the more adventurous!
Ciao for now!
Leonie Newton
International Student Coordinator.
YEAR 9 ASSESSMENT
All year 9 students will be preparing for and sitting the QCAT exams for English, Mathematics and
Science over the next few weeks.
It is extremely important that students Issue 26 – 3rd September 2009
Have all necessary equipment – pens, pencils, rulers, protractors, CALCULATORS,
erasers, books
Are present at school for all the preparation and testing.
These items are completed state-wide and used for informative, student progress reports.
Queensland Comparable Assessment Tasks (QCATs) aim to provide:
A model of authentic, performance-based assessment aligned to a selection of Essential
Learnings and to the Standards
Resources to support consistency in the way teachers make judgements about the qualities
in student work
Information for teachers and students relevant to a selection of Essential Learnings about
what students know, understand and can do, what is working well and what needs
attention.
QCATs are assessments that encourage and rely upon interaction between teachers and students.
They ask students to use relevant knowledge and skills to respond to a meaningful problem.
These assessments are resources that provide teachers, students, parents and carers with
information to contribute to discussions about student learning and to plan for future learning. The
effectiveness of these assessments in providing helpful information will depend on the level of
interaction teachers have with their students before, during and after implementation.
Mathematics preparation and testing is between August 31st and September 7th, Science between
September 8th and 16th and English preparation will be on the 15th, 16th and 17th September.
YEAR 10 COORDINATOR NEWS
Hello to parents of year 10 students at YSHS. My name is Mark Thompson and I have taken on the
coordinator role for the year 10 cohort for Term 3 and Term 4. This is a busy time for year 10
students as they are focussed on the next two years of their schooling with subject and career
choices for Year 11 & 12. To help students prepare for this transition it is really important to help
them make wise
choices.
For the past few weeks I have been having Wednesday afternoon study group in the school library.
This has been for students to catch on work that they may have missed out on in class due to
absenteeism. For some students it has been a major issue with many days or part days of school
being missed. I am sure at times some parents are not aware that their children may not be at
school. So the opportunity to catch up on assessment and missed worked has been helpful to
these students.
As students move into year 11 & 12 there are legal requirements that parents and students will
need to be aware of relating to attendance at school and how this may impact on them later
towards graduation. Year 10 is the time that students need to be practising and continuing to
develop good study and learning habits.
The Wednesday afternoon study group is planned to continue in Term 4 with students choosing to
stay if they want to catch up on work. For some students it will be a decision made by their parents
and teachers based on their performance and attendance in class. If you are keen to support your
student’s learning then please contact me to discuss options for Term 4.
Thank you to all the parents who have supported their student’s learning and thank you to those
parents who have opted to include their child/children in the after-school study group.
I look forward to hearing from you in term 4 and together we can make sure students are well-
prepared for the challenges ahead.

INSTRUMENTAL  MUSIC
To our Senior Concert Band, Big Band and String Orchestra on their excellent results in the
Gladstone Eisteddfod.
The YSHS String Orchestra, instructed by Fiona Dobson, performed admirably to receive a third
place in the, ‘Secondary String Orchestra’ division of the eisteddfod. Our Big Band directed by
Jason Smyth, performed in the ‘Stage Band’ section and were awarded 1st place along with our
Senior Concert Band conducted by Jeanette Douglas, who were also awarded 1st place in the
‘Secondary Concert Band’ division. Both ensembles delivered exceptional performances.
Thank you to all of the students and parents who continue to support our instrumental music
program and to Amanda Locker who volunteered her time to supervise students on the day. To our
dedicated teachers, Jeanette Douglas, Jason Smyth and Fiona Dobson, thank you for the tireless
effort you put into nurturing our young musicians and the long hours you all contribute to preparing
our ensembles.
NEWS FROM HPE
Netball
Congratulations to all of the girls who represented our school in such a positive manner throughout
the netball season. This year we had the Open B1, Open C1 and U/14B teams reach the final
series.
Unfortunately the Open B1 team were knocked out by NRH in a nail-biting preliminary final. The
O’Dea sisters put in consistent performances with Alex zipping around in centre position and Pene
doing a great job in defence with partner, Aimee McGuire. A special thanks needs to go to the year
12’s amongst the players who played their final season of school netball competition.
In the Open C1 clash against Emmaus College the girls battled hard but were unable to prevent a
mere 2 goal defeat. Adriana Dusmanovic dictated terms in the centre of the court, linking well with
in-form shooter, Lucille Smith, who made regular shooting opportunities count. The energetic
Rebecca Hurley also made a nuisance of herself to the opposition in the wing attack position as
she was difficult to track.
The U/14B team had played magnificent netball all season and were rewarded by making the
Grand Final after beating Emmaus College in extra time in the major semi final. Unfortunately the
girls were unable to defeat the Emmaus team as they again faced off in the Grand Final. It was a
fast paced game with both teams going goal for goal during the first three quarters. Sarah Dixon
was a handful for the opposition in the centre of the court while Grace Hoffman did an excellent job
in both attack and defence. The Emmaus side took advantage of loose passes and came home
with a 16-12 victory in the final quarter.
A special thanks needs to go to Mrs Kelso, Mrs McLuskie, Ms Fleming, Miss Johnstone, Miss
Bond, Mrs Mann, Mrs Fattore and Mr Kussrow for the time and effort they have placed in the YHS
netball season. Without their support the school would not be able to enter so many teams in the
competition.
