Ian Boon

ITS NOT OK TO BE AWAY!
Many students have their educational progress severely interrupted by absences which are more
often than not, unnecessary, and for reasons fairly low on the important to my future scale.
To reach their potential at school, students need to attend regularly. This means a few days off
per year due to genuine illness not an 8 day fortnight which accumulates to 50 days absent, 300
periods absent, the equivalent of 8 school weeks absent in a year. How could any student be
expected to keep up with work in such circumstances? Parents - you have a critical role to play
in protecting your own childs future. During 2008, YSHSs attendance rate was 82% which
is near ly equivalent to an 8 day fortnight.
Absences can be minimised by arranging dental and doctors appointments after school or during
the holidays you need to book ahead. Why not book now for school holidays later in the
year. Shopping, helping at home, and visiting relatives may all seem important at the time but
are not as important as a persons FUTURE.
We (parents and the school) need to work together to help students to understand the
importance of being at school whenever possible, and that trivial reasons for absence are
not sufficient to discharge parents legal responsibilities.
Schools and parents have a legal responsibility to account for the whereabouts of young
people daily (and in the evenings as well).
Studies show there is a far greater chance of students becoming early school leavers and/or
long-term unemployed adults, if they dont attend school regularly.
Should you require support in saying NO to your son/daughter on their attendance or any other
issue please contact us immediately.
We all can work together to make a difference to your students future.
Be on time, Be at school, thats the rule!
![]() Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) There was good news in the mail last week for nearly
600 recent school leavers who received a QCE in the first mid-year awarding of the new
qualification. Although these students graduated from Yr 12 in 2008 they kept working towards
achieving a QCE by completing a range of vocational education and training subjects. Mid-year
certification again highlights the flexibility of the QCE in terms of what students learn, as well as
where and when that learning occurs.

Senior SOSE Students
Final planning and arrangements for the Senior SOSE student trip to Melbourne are on track for
the 5 night excursion. Mr Thompson will be travelling with twelve year 11 & 12 students on
Thursday 15 October to Melbourne. The group will flying with Tiger Airways and will be staying at
the North Melbourne YHA for 5 nights. One highlight of the trip will be visiting the Melbourne
Museum to view A Day in Pompeii exhibition.
The exhibition shows life in an ancient roman town before it was destroyed and forgotten for
hundreds of years. The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79 AD produced a
vast storm of pumice and volcanic ash that buried the town of Pompeii. Like a time capsule, the
town its businesses and homes, gardens and shops was encased for almost 2,000 years. With
more than 250 objects many never shown before in Australia A Day in Pompeii will immerse
the students in all aspects of life in the ancient town. Priceless objects of luxury and exquisite
beauty sit beside everyday items like cooking pots and wine jars.
![]() Parents are asked to make sure payments for the excursion are completed by the first week of
Term 4 which commences on Monday 5 October, 2009. On Tuesday, 6 October at 6 pm 7 pm
there will be an information evening held at YSHS for parents and students who are involved
in the trip. Information will be shared about the travel arrangements, accommodation, emergency
contacts details and the final itinerary. All parents and students are encouraged to attend. For
further information contact Mark Thompson on email mthom284@eq.edu.au . Mark is currently on
sick leave for the remainder of Term 3 but will be able to respond to your emails. No new students
will be able to participate in this excursion as all travel and accommodation arrangements are now
complete.
Parents are asked to help students in Year 10 English class Novel Study
Just a quick note to remind parents that year 10 students in Mr Thompsons
English class are reading novels over the holidays. Students can choose their
own novel to read. The only requirement is that it must have teenagers as the
main characters. This allows students to indulge their own favourite genres and enjoy reading.
Parents are asked to assist students by reminding them of their commitment and to support their
reading anyway they can. Students will be comparing their own choice of novel with a choice of
two Australian novels by authors John Marsden and Scott Monk which will be read in Term 4.
Thank you to parents for your assistance and support of your childs literacy education. Mr
Thompson mthom284@eq.edu.au
Term 3 has been an extremely busy 10 weeks with many sports in full swing. It has been a very
successful term in regards to sports participation and the amount of effort that has been shown by
all of the students competing.
Girls Basketball
The girls have been training and playing hard over the past couple of weeks and all of
their hard work is paying off. There has been a vast improvement in skill levels and the
effort the girls have been showing has been outstanding. Standout players for the
Senior team have been Brooke Edwards, Simone Stewart and Lacey Boyd. The
standout players for the Junior team include Tayla Boys and Vanessa Stewart. Hopefully the girls
will continue to train hard next term and we will begin to win some more games. Well done, girls!
District Athletics
Congratulations go to the 7 students who represented our school at the
Capricornia Athletics trials a fortnight ago. Alex ODea, Luke Lambart, Alan
Rutherford, Melanie Kitching, Tanner Ward, Tim Minnecon and Rojahne
Bembridge all did our school extremely proud as they put in a great effort on the
day. Special congratulations go to Alex ODea and Luke Lambart who made the
Capricornia team who will attend the State Championships next month.
Surf League
The annual Surf League Competition will be held in Tannum Sands on the 23rd of
October. Students wanting to compete on the day must nominate by seeing Mr
Holloway. We are hoping to get enough students to hopefully take a bus so if you are
interested please get involved.
With the Year 10, 11 and 12 students out this week, teachers have been very busy
marking and finalising results, particularly those involved with senior classes. All Year
12 students are reminded that your Lawn Bowls reports are due by the end of this
week. Year 8 students will this week be given their latest assessment piece (due week
4 next term) for those who are keen to get started over the holidays!
We would like to thank Mrs Kendell and Mr Obradovick who have both been covering Mr
Livingstones classes over the past weeks whilst he has been on paternity leave. Their
contributions have helped out everyone in the HPE staffroom and provided the students with the
![]() opportunity to continue their practical lessons which Im sure were greatly appreciated. Have an
active and safe break!
